Cargill Presented Paper Co-Authored By Dr. Cummins at 57th Reciprocal Meat
Conference on June 23, 2004 Discussing Use of Oral Interferon as Alternative
to Depopulation of Affected Animals
AMARILLO, Texas, June 24 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Dr. Joseph M. Cummins,
President and CEO of Amarillo Biosciences Inc. (OTC Bulletin Board: AMAR)
(ABI) has accepted an invitation to speak at the Japan Interferon Cytokine
Research meeting on July 31, 2004. The annual symposium is being held in
Misawa City on Honshu Island where Dr. Cummins will review ABI's development
plans for oral interferon in animal and human health. ABI's efforts to focus
attention on the use of oral interferon to help combat foot-and-mouth disease
(FMD) virus in livestock will also be discussed. Moreover, the mechanism of
action of orally administered interferon will be reviewed.
Separately, the Company announced that Dr. Albert Paszek of Cargill Inc.,
who shares ABI's concern about FMD, presented a paper June 23, 2004, at the
57th Reciprocal Meat Conference in Lexington, Kentucky as part of a
presentation: FMD: Alternatives to Scorched Earth Policies." The paper was
titled "Orally Administered Interferon to Prevent/Treat Foot-and-Mouth
Disease" and was co-authored by Drs. Paszek and Cummins in addition to Drs.
Steven Krakowka and David Hutcheson.
Current planned response to the occurrence of FMD is to stop the movement
of all livestock, slaughter and burial (or burning) of infected and exposed
livestock and disinfection of affected/exposed farms. "If FMD virus is
introduced by terrorists in multiple locations," said Dr. Cummins, "the
government's attempt to eradicate FMD will require the slaughter and disposal
of millions of animals. Nothing could please terrorists more than to watch
the US Government kill millions of animals in response to their agroterrorism.
After all, the FMD generally kills less than 1% of affected animals but the
government's response kills 100%. What we need is a planned response that
allows survival of our livestock. Dr. Paszek and I believe immune modulation
with oral interferon and vaccination is a better way to respond to FMD."
