The presentation will include an overview of Paratek's work in their
Tetracycline and MAR (Multiple Antibiotic Resistance) Programs. In their
Tetracycline Program, Paratek has developed a database of more than 1,000
novel, proprietary Tetracyclines designed to address widespread resistance to
the drug, as well as potentially offering new therapies for a wide range of
conditions from arthritis to cancer. In their MAR Program, Paratek is
exploiting the discovery of a novel bacterial genetic switch that controls a
large set of genes in disease-causing bacteria. Paratek is identifying
compounds that interfere with this master switch, thereby disabling bacterial
defense mechanisms and/or reducing virulence. A copy of the Paratek
presentation will be available at the same link after the Forum.
Paratek is a privately-held specialty pharmaceuticals company,
headquartered in Boston, Mass., that is engaged in the discovery and
commercialization of novel therapeutics that treat life-threatening infectious
disease agents, including those that have become resistant to existing
antibiotic treatments. Dr. Stuart B. Levy, Professor of Molecular Biology and
Microbiology and of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine and
Dr. Walter Gilbert, the Nobel Prize-winning Professor at Harvard University
founded Paratek in 1996. Dr. Levy and his scientific team at Tufts University
School of Medicine created Paratek to harness more than 25 years of research
and discovery in mechanisms of antibiotic resistance and tetracycline
chemistry. In 1999, the Company announced a research collaboration with
GlaxoSmithKline plc (formerly Glaxo Wellcome plc) for the development of new
anti-infective products.
