BOULDER, Colo., June 25 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --
Exabyte Corporation (Nasdaq: EXBT), a performance and value leader in tape
backup systems, and Toshiba's Computer Systems Group (CSG) announced today
that Exabyte VXA-1 tape drives have been tested for use with Dantz Retrospect
Backup Software on Toshiba's Magnia line of servers. The VXA-1/Retrospect
bundle will be offered as a third-party add-on storage solution with the
Magnia 550D, Magnia 3200, Magnia 7100, and the newest addition to the Magna
server line -- the Magnia Z310 -- a unique half-rack wide, 2U space-saving,
high-performance wireless mobility server. The servers and tape drives will
be featured at PC Expo in New York, June 25 to 27.
Designed for reliability and assured, continuous availability, the Magnia
server line offers the right blend of flexibility, power and size to
accommodate the evolving demands of any size business. The servers range from
entry-level servers for small businesses with limited IT budgets to robust
enterprise servers for vast data processing that can handle data-intensive
applications ranging from high transaction processing and data mining, to
managing large amounts of customer data.
"With VXA tape backup, our server customers have access to an affordable
and dependable solution for data archival and disaster recovery," said Bill
Greenlund, vice president, server marketing group, Toshiba CSG.
"Additionally, Exabyte VXA-1 tape drives, combined with Toshiba's new Magnia
Z310 wireless mobility server offer users a robust storage solution combined
with full-featured wireless networking capability."
"Toshiba and other OEMs are sensitive to the issues of reliability and
value that make VXA an ideal choice for a server-attached tape backup
solution," said Tom Ward, president and CEO of Exabyte. "All of us at Exabyte
are very pleased that Toshiba has selected VXA tape drives for use with their
Magnia servers. Their choice adds to VXA's growing momentum as a de facto
tape backup solution in both the OEM channel and the distribution sales
channel."
Toshiba will offer SCSI and IDE/ATAPI interface versions of the VXA-1 tape
drive, with 33 GB of uncompressed capacity (66 GB with built-in ALDC
compression) and 3 Mb/sec of transfer rate (6 Mb/sec compressed). The Exabyte
VXA-1 drive and VXA AutoPak 1X10 autoloader will be featured at the Toshiba
booth at PC Expo, June 25-27, 2002, Javits Convention Center, New York.
Demonstrations of these storage products and the Magnia servers will be on
display during normal show hours at booth #3136.
About VXA Tape Technology
First introduced in 1999, award-winning VXA tape products offer a unique
combination of reliability, performance, and value. VXA drives are the ideal
replacement for drives based on the popular DDS tape technology, which has
reached the end of its product roadmap. The ending of the DDS roadmap means
that millions of DDS users must migrate to alternative tape backup
technologies. VXA offers them the ideal solution with higher capacity and
performance at the same price point as DDS. VXA also offers superior
reliability, based on an innovative read/write architecture with a highly
reliable Internet-like packet format, designed for 100% data restore. The
published VXA roadmap extends through several generations into VXA-4, ensuring
long-term protection of users' investments in drives and media. Higher
capacities and unattended backup are available with Exabyte's VXA AutoPak
product line, a family of low-cost entry-level tape automation devices
featuring the VXA AutoPak 1x15 autoloader, the VXA AutoPak 2x30 mini-library,
and the newly announced VXA AutoPak 1x10, a 2U rack mount autoloader. VXA-1
tape drives are certified for Windows, Mac, and Linux, and VXA-1 is an
ECMA-certified tape standard. Computer manufacturers who have chosen VXA
include Apple, Compaq, Fujitsu, Logitec, and Toshiba.
