PennDOT Presents Last Phase of Fort Pitt Bridge Project 2000

PITTSBURGH, June 26 /PRNewswire/ -- In preparation for the last phase of
work this year on the Fort Pitt Bridge, PennDOT officials announced
forthcoming construction plans and traffic detours for the project.
On July 5, work on the ramps from the Fort Pitt Bridge inbound to Liberty
Avenue and the Boulevard of the Allies will be completed and open to traffic.
Following the opening, work will begin on the ramps to the Fort Duquesne
Bridge, Fort Duquesne Boulevard and the Tenth Street Bypass.
"We are reopening the main access to the Golden Triangle, which is a plus
for all Downtown commuters," said Ray Hack, PennDOT district engineer.
In preparation for the last phase of construction, Route 51 will be
modified to serve as the primary detour for Phase II. During the detour,
traffic traveling on Route 51 North to I-279 South (the Parkway West toward
the airport) will exit in the right lane, while traffic traveling on Route 51
North towards the West End Circle will continue in the left lane.
The detour is being established to allow contractors to reconstruct the
ramps from the Fort Pitt Bridge over Point State Park to the Fort Duquesne
Bridge, Fort Duquesne Boulevard ramp and the Tenth Street Bypass ramp.
Additionally, the West End Circle, like last year, will be closed to
circulation traffic, permitting only northbound and southbound traffic to use
the circle. All traffic signals will be turned off to allow a continuous flow
of traffic.
Milling and resurfacing of the roadway and installation of new lighting
and drainage on the bridge are included in the $13.8 million project.
Gibsonia-based Brayman Construction Corporation is contractor for the project.
"We are confident, based on our track record, that people will adjust to
the new traffic patterns," Hack said. "Today is a step in that direction."
PennDOT will issue regular project updates to local news media. Current
information is available 24 hours a day by calling the toll-free hotline at
877-450-4279, or by visiting PennDOT on-line at http://www.epenndot.com.
