The Easiest Way to Share One High-Speed Internet Connection -- Actiontec's New 4 Port Ethernet Broadband Router

Plain-English Instructions Let Small & Home Offices Share Web Access & Create
                              Networks in a Snap

NEW YORK, June 26 /PRNewswire/ -- PC Expo, Meeting Room 111 -- For all
small and home office users who need to share their cable or DSL connection
but don't know a PPPoE address from a DHCP server, Actiontec Electronics
offers the new Actiontec 4 Port Ethernet Broadband Router -- the first product
of its kind that requires no technical expertise for installation.
This easy and cost-effective solution for shared Internet access
eliminates the need to pay for multiple IP addresses. By linking multiple
routers together, up to 253 users can be online simultaneously if permitted by
the Internet service provider -- all for the cost of a single Internet hookup.
The router also turns all connected computers into a local area network
that allows users to share files, printers, scanners, CD-ROM drives and other
resources. In addition, the product's ability to route traffic both within
the home network and to the Internet makes it possible for different users to
play different multi-player Internet games simultaneously.
Instead of asking for the user's Primary DNS Server, IP Subnet Mask or
other information familiar only to technical experts, Actiontec's Web-based
installation wizard asks for little more than user name, password, and whether
the user is connecting to the Internet through cable modem or DSL. If
technical terms are used, they are defined in simple language.

    Other features include:

-- Anti-hacking protection via Network Address Translation (NAT), an
Internet standard that makes it possible to use one set of IP addresses
for internal traffic and a second set for external traffic. This
provides a type of firewall by hiding internal IP addresses from
       potential intruders.

-- Support for the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), a dynamic
IP address assignment system that simplifies network administration by
eliminating the need to assign a unique IP address to every computer on
the network; and DNS Proxy, a standard that simplifies configuration by
handling translation of domain names into the corresponding IP
       addresses.

-- A built-in Manager interface for advanced configurations that is
accessible by the embedded web-based management tool.

Installation is a simple matter of plugging the router's power supply into
the wall, connecting the user's broadband cable to the gateway, and following
a series of computer prompts in the setup program. The router box can stand
flat or on its side for maximum flexibility.
The product requires prior installation of 10BaseT Ethernet or 100BaseTX
Fast Ethernet cabling to transmit information between computers at speeds of
10 and 100 million bits per second (Mbps) as well as Ethernet cards in each
connected computer. The reliance on Ethernet, the most common standard for
connecting computers in a business environment, overcomes the limitations of
phoneline-based systems that force users to place their routers near phone
jacks.
The Actiontec 4 Port Ethernet Broadband Router will support Windows 98,
Windows ME, Windows 2000 and Window NT 4 or higher. The package will include
all cables required for setup, including an AC adapter and power cord. It
will carry an MSRP of $129.95, ship in August, and be available at major
computer chains nationwide as well as the Actiontec online store at
http://www.actiontecstore.com .
