SANTA CLARA, Calif., June 26 /PRNewswire/ --
Applied Imaging Corp. (Nasdaq: AICX) announced that it has introduced several
new applications for its MDS(TM) platform to assist pathologists in their
review of key breast cancer tests. These applications provide the pathologist
with the capability to automate and quantify the analysis of Estrogen and
Progesterone Receptors (ER/PR), Ki-67, p53 and AE1/AE3. This new software
release also offers additional functionality for the system's existing
Her-2/neu application.
The MDS(TM) utilizes the new applications to identify cancer cells that
have been appropriately stained and provides the pathologist with quantitative
information regarding the average staining intensity and percentage of stained
cells on the slide. The existing immunohistochemistry-based Her-2/neu
application has been enhanced to provide the pathologist with additional
scoring mechanisms to assist in the determination of Her-2/neu protein
overexpression. The latter is an important factor in the selection of
therapies for breast cancer patients.
According to Carl Hull, Applied Imaging's CEO, "This is an exciting step
forward for the company. We are pleased to expand our MDS(TM) capability and
enhance the ability of the pathologist to provide accurate and objective
analyses of test results to improve physician decision making. With these new
applications, our customers will be able to perform immunohistochemistry
analysis on the nucleus, cytoplasm and membranes of cells in tissue sections."
Hull continued, "We anticipate that additional applications will be released
in the third quarter, including the first automated applications to evaluate
Her-2/neu gene expression using our proprietary fluorescence (FISH) imaging
technology."
The new applications introduced today, as well as those anticipated for
the third quarter, are being released to clinical and research sites for
research use, pending application to the Food and Drug Administration for full
clearance of the applications for routine clinical use.
About Applied Imaging
Applied Imaging Corp., based in Santa Clara, California, is the leading
supplier of automated imaging systems utilized in genetics and pathology
laboratories for the analysis of chromosomes in cancer and prenatal disorders.
The Company has installed over 2000 imaging systems in 1000 laboratories in
more than 35 countries. Applied Imaging markets a range of clinical and
research imaging systems for fluorescence and brightfield microscopy
applications, including the Company's MDS(TM), CytoVision(R), PowerGene(R) and
Quips(R) product lines.
About the MDS(TM) System
The MDS(TM) System is an advanced scanning microscopy system that uses
brightfield and fluorescence techniques to detect targeted cancer cells in
concentrations as low as one cell among one million other cells. Once
detected, the MDS(TM) utilizes proprietary fluorescence analysis software for
the analysis of multiple genetic markers within individual cells or in tissue
sections taken from primary tumors. The ability to detect and analyze
multiple genetic markers simultaneously allows researchers to develop panels
of genetic tests that may be used in the future to select treatments and
monitor individual patient responses to therapy.
This press release contains forward looking statements as defined in the
Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995, regarding, among other
matters, the Company's new applications under development. Forward looking
statements address matters that are subject to a number of risks and
uncertainties, including the timing and success of our research and
