    LEXINGTON, Mass., June 26 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --
Rational Software (Nasdaq: RATL) today announced that its software
configuration management (SCM) solution, which includes Rational(R)
ClearCase(R) and Rational(R) ClearQuest(R), and its analysis, modeling and
design (AMD) solution, Rational Rose(R), were named the market share leaders
in their respective categories by International Data Corporation (IDC).
These results are available in IDC's reports entitled: "Worldwide Software
Configuration Management Tools Forecast and Analysis, 2002-2006" (IDC# 27290)
and "Worldwide Analysis, Modeling, and Design Tools Forecast and Analysis,
2002-2006" (IDC# 27248R). These reports examine the SCM and AMD markets and
leading vendor performance for 2001, and provide a market forecast through
2006.

    Software Configuration Management
Rational's SCM solution continued to dominate the software configuration
management market in 2001, with a 36.5 percent share. Rational's SCM solution
market share grew in 2001 despite a decline in revenue in the overall SCM
market during the year. Additional information on Rational's SCM solution is
available at http://www.rational.com/products/scm/index.jsp.
"Our research shows that customers will increasingly demand SCM tools that
provide integrated management of not only life-cycle artifacts but also life-
cycle processes," said Dick Heiman, IDC analyst and author of "Worldwide
Software Configuration Management Tools Forecast and Analysis, 2002-2006."
"Therefore, we believe that Rational's broad range of integrated products,
suites marketing strategy and process focus all bode well for their future
growth."

    Analysis, Modeling and Design
IDC reported that Rational was the AMD market share leader for the second
year in a row, extending its leadership position with a "commanding" 30.7
percent share of the market in 2001. This is substantially higher than the
8.3 percent registered in 2001 by the next company in this category.
Additional information on Rational Rose is available at

"We believe that companies are continuing to look for ways to achieve
their business objectives by producing higher quality applications in shorter
time periods," said Rikki Kirzner, IDC analyst and author of "Worldwide
Analysis, Modeling, and Design Tools Forecast and Analysis, 2002-2006."
"Therefore customers will continue to look to leading edge companies to
provide them with AMD solutions that offer more capabilities, features and
functionality to help drive their success."
"We're thrilled that Rational's SCM and AMD solutions have once again been
named the runaway leaders in their respective markets by IDC," said Eric
Schurr, chief marketing officer, Rational Software. "Our customers continue
to improve and enhance their software development processes with Rational's
SCM and AMD solutions, and these market results are another indication of
their success. Rational's software development solutions liberate project
leaders, developers, analysts and testers from time consuming activities that
delay software development projects, enabling them to create higher quality
business applications and software products faster."
