Tekne Award Nominations Open Through Aug. 2; MHTA and MTI Announce New Award Categories That Honor Consultants, Leaders and Innovators

    MINNEAPOLIS, June 27 /PRNewswire/ -- The Minnesota High Tech Association
(MHTA) and Minnesota Technology, Inc. (MTI) are now accepting nominations for
the 2002 Tekne Awards, which will be held Thursday, Oct. 10 at the Minneapolis
Convention Center.  The Tekne Awards program is an Academy Award-style event
that recognizes accomplishments in innovation, development, commercialization
and management of technology across the state of Minnesota.
    The annual awards program is sponsored by MHTA and MTI in partnership with
Medical Alley, MNBIO and Minnesota Project Innovation.  The nomination forms
are available online at http://www.tekneawards.org .  Entries will be accepted
through Friday, Aug. 2.
    New to this year's awards is the Technology Consulting category, which
honors an emerging company (annual revenues under $50 million) and an
established company or a division within an established company for innovative
enablement of a client's use of technology.
    Additional award categories and descriptions include:

    The Leadership Award
    Honors an outstanding individual who, beyond a specific innovation or
achievement, has contributed significantly to Minnesota's technology expansion
and sets an example for others to follow.

    The Innovative Development Award
    The Innovative Development Award honors a business, academic institution
or business/academic collaboration that has demonstrated leadership,
dedication and excellence in the development of an innovation in areas such as
digital technology, nano technology, MEMS, or Biotech with the potential to
contribute significantly to Minnesota's technology-based economy.

    Technology Company Award
    The Technology Company award is given to an emerging company (annual
revenues under $50 million) and an established company (annual revenues of
$50 million+) or division within an established company.
    This Technology Company award for emerging companies recognizes a company
that exemplifies the entrepreneurial spirit and promises continued economic
growth through technology development and/or application in each of the
following five categories:
    -- Life sciences--Industrial and agricultural biotechnology,
       pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, life sciences research, and medical
       devices and equipment
    -- Communications--Communication services, networking and communications
       equipment, and wireless
    -- Advance Manufacturing--Advanced materials and chemicals, machinery and
       equipment, electronics and components, measuring instruments,
       photonics, optics and lasers, and computer and peripheral equipment
    -- IT Software--Software, application development, other IT services
    -- Technology Consulting--Innovative enablement of a client's use of
       technology

    The Technology Company award for established companies recognizes a
company or division of a company whose entrepreneurial culture, success record
and contribution to Minnesota's technology-based economy exemplifies the best
of Minnesota's technology community in each of the categories outlined above.
