Winona State University Extends Deal With Gateway for $6.5 Million in Notebook PCs, Creating the Largest Higher-Ed Tablet PC Implementation in the U.S.

Gateway to Supply M285 Convertible Notebook PCs With Powerful Dual Core
Technology to Minnesota University for Use Campus-Wide

IRVINE, Calif., June 27 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Gateway, Inc. the
nation's third-largest PC company, today announced it has extended its
contract with Winona State University (WSU) to include $6.5 million in M285
Convertible Notebook PCs and associated training, technical support and
services. The one-year contract is for 4,200 notebooks to be used as part
of WSU's Laptop Program, the largest tablet PC implementation for higher
education in the country.
Now in its seventh year, the WSU Laptop Program has put a total of
7,600 Gateway convertible notebooks in the hands of WSU students, faculty
and staff. The design of the convertible notebook makes it easy for
students to take notes using the digital pen or keyboard while standing or
seated at a desk. It also enables students to more easily communicate with
teachers and other students, wirelessly access coursework, and to store all
lessons, term papers and reports on the hard drive for future reference.
The convertible notebooks enable faculty to enhance the student's
learning environment by sharing interactive presentations in real time and
providing immediate feedback on course work, using the digital pen on the
screen. Additionally, the technology enables teachers to easily respond to
student questions or concerns in a timely manner.
"We have a long-standing relationship with Gateway because they are
committed to providing quality products and services to WSU," said Dave
Greshman, vice president for Information Technology for WSU. "Every year,
they work closely with us to add value to our program. They act as a
partner by helping us meet our goals, keeping our best interests in mind
and going beyond simply providing the hardware."
"WSU offers its students a tremendous educational program by providing
cutting-edge technology that enriches their academic experience," said Vin
Riera, vice president of public sector, Gateway. "Not only is WSU a
customer, but they are a valued partner as well. The university was
instrumental in the development of the convertible notebook, and their
direct feedback and collaboration has provided valuable feedback on
features and functionality that would better help students, faculty and
staff."
    Winona State University Laptop Program
Winona State University boasts the largest higher-education
implementation of tablet PCs in North America. WSU is committed to
providing students with the knowledge and experiences needed for lifelong
learning. The University believes that continued use of the laptop can
enhance that experience; therefore, all students are required to
participate in the Laptop Program. With a two-year exchange cycle for
laptops, students always have access to the latest technology.
Included in the laptop program is walk-in technical support, phone
support, learning workshops, online course availability, access to network
appliances and services, personal website and network storage, and access
to campus printers with unlimited printing. Additionally, students are able
to get a loaner laptop for extended repairs, replacement of the laptop if
necessary, laptop damage control and insurance, and software updates. For
more information on the laptop program, visit http://www.winona.edu/its/Laptop.
    Gateway M285 Convertible Notebook
The unique design of the Gateway M285 Convertible Notebook enables it
to be easily "converted" from notebook into tablet-mode, making it ideal
for the many environments where a mouse and keyboard are not practical,
such as taking notes in class. After the display has been swiveled and
folded down upon the keyboard, users can write notes, draw diagrams and
edit documents directly on the large 14-inch widescreen display, which
provides valuable extra work space over standard format displays. The
display is comfortable to use, since it's flush with the surrounding frame
and closely resembles the size of a legal pad of paper. Also, writing is
crisp thanks to the digital pen's Continuous Sensing Technology(TM) that
improves accuracy.
In addition to Tablet PC capabilities, the Gateway M285 Convertible
Notebook is also a full-featured notebook PC. Intel Centrino Duo Mobile
Technology complements the system's high-performance features, such as fast
SATA hard drives and dual channel memory. The notebook easily connects to
digital devices, digital media and peripherals via a 7-in-1 Media Card
Reader, three USB 2.0 ports and one IEEE 1394 port for listening to music
or watching DVDs. Plus, the convertible notebook offers standard integrated
802.11a/b/g Wi-Fi for connecting to campus and wireless hot-spots, and
Bluetooth(R) connectivity for a personal cord-free connection to headsets,
printers and other peripherals.
