ECHUCA, Victoria, Australia, June 22, 2000 -- Victoria's Treasurer and
Minister for State and Regional Development, John Brumby, will open the Heinz
Wattie's Australasia Infant Feeding Centre of Excellence at Echuca at
12:15 p.m. tomorrow.
Mr. Brumby said: "This new Centre of Excellence represents a significant
vote of confidence in regional Victoria. The Government has supported Heinz
Wattie's because it has introduced a major new company into the regional
economy and this will provide local employment."
The Centre of Excellence at Echuca is a dedicated and specialised site
with the advantage of being positioned close to the source of fresh, quality
produce. This will allow Heinz Wattie's to produce more nutritious infant
food, develop its whole product range and achieve greater product innovation.
Area Vice President for Heinz Japan and Heinz Wattie's Australasia,
Neville Fielke said: "We have assembled a highly skilled, motivated team at
Echuca in a culture built around teamwork. At the new Centre of Excellence we
will produce about 12,000 tonnes of finished product annually, across more
than 130 varieties, including infant food for export and niche markets such as
congee, halal, kosher and organics."
The Echuca site was acquired by Heinz Wattie's in November 1999 and
modifications have been made to the main process area, with additional factory
space built. The clean room environment is designed for flexibility and
future innovation and the latest technology will allow Heinz Wattie's to
deliver quality, consistency and competitively priced infant food.
