MARLBOROUGH, Mass., April 7 /PRNewswire/ -- swisscontrol, Switzerland's
Air Traffic Management Authority, has awarded Raytheon Company
(NYSE: RTNA; RTNB) Part 1 of a system specification contract that will lead to
a state-of-the-art Air Traffic Management Automation System (ATMAS).
Andrew Goldman, vice president of Raytheon's International Air Traffic
Control organization, said, "We look forward to continuing our relationship
with swisscontrol on the procurement of the ATMAS System. During this initial
ATMAS contract, Raytheon will deliver a mini air traffic management (ATM)
system and work with swisscontrol to develop detailed system specifications,
including the critical user interfaces, which will establish a firm baseline
for the advanced ATM system."
During Part 1 of the current contract, swisscontrol will evaluate the
systems of two competing suppliers and eventually choose
the system which best responds to its requirements. Swiss airspace is one of
the most complex and congested in Europe.
When the ATMAS deployment is complete, the system will integrate the ATM
system with the country's new military air defense and airspace management
system (FLORAKO), which is being provided by a consortium led by Raytheon.
Raytheon and swisscontrol have a long and successful history of working
together on air traffic management systems. Raytheon has provided solid-state
digital airport surveillance primary radars, monopulse secondary surveillance
radars, simulators, and the ATM/AIS Data Acquisition Processing and Transfer
(ADAPT) air traffic management system to swisscontrol. ADAPT provides the
display processing for more than 40 controller positions, handles external
interfaces such as weather forecasts, and interfaces with the existing radar
and flight data processors.
Raytheon's experience in air traffic management systems is extensive,
ranging from individual airport installations to countrywide, multiple-site
turnkey systems. Raytheon's state-of-the-art ATC systems are in use in
numerous countries around the world -- including Germany, Australia, Brazil,
Bulgaria, Canada, China, India, Indonesia, Jamaica, Lebanon, Mongolia,
Botswana, Netherlands, Norway, Oman, Switzerland and the United States -- in
both civil and military applications.
Raytheon Company, based in Lexington, Mass., is a global technology leader
