TUCSON, Ariz., April 26 /PRNewswire/ -- In response to an urgent and
compelling U.S. Air Force need, Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTNA; RTNB) delivered
50 GBU-12 Paveway II Laser Guided Bomb (LGB) kits in less than 30 days from
contract award -- a response time that was well under the 90-day contract
requirement.
"We were able to provide this quick turnaround because we've maintained an
ongoing production line and supplier base through our own investment and in
support of Paveway II international customers," explained Charles S. Ross,
Raytheon vice president of Strike Weapons at Raytheon's Missile Systems
business unit in Tucson.
"The Hill Air Force Base/Raytheon Paveway team is doubly proud of this
feat for two reasons. First, the last U.S. Air Force procurement of Paveway II
was in 1982; and, second, we successfully moved the Paveway II production line
900 miles from Texas to Tucson last year and began deliveries to the
warfighter less than a month after receiving a contract."
The 50 bomb kits were the first deliveries under a $43.5 million firm-
fixed-price award announced in January for 2,245 Paveway II bomb kits and
associated equipment to replace weapons expended during the recent Kosovo
conflict. Deliveries of the remaining kits will be complete by the end of this
year.
The Paveway family of laser guided bombs features an onboard guidance
system to detect and guide the unit to a target illuminated by an external
laser source. The Paveway samples the reflected laser energy from the target,
corrects its trajectory as it glides, terminating at the target. The Paveway
II bomb kits are used to adapt the MK-80 series general purpose warheads
(500 to 2,000 pounds) to full-up Paveway II LGBs. These LGB configurations are
operational on most U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy fighter and bomber aircraft
as well as the aircraft of many allied nations.
Raytheon Company, based in Lexington, Mass., is a global technology leader
