DEERFIELD, Ill., June 29 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Walgreens, the nation's
largest drugstore chain, today announced that employees called to active
military duty will receive special benefits for up to 36 months. Previously,
employees were eligible for these benefits for up to 24 months from the day
they're called up.
This is the third time Walgreens has increased the length of active duty
benefits. In June 2004, Walgreens increased the benefit period from 18 to 24
months.
"The Walgreen employees -- and their families -- who are on active duty,
especially those serving in Afghanistan and Iraq, carry a special burden,"
said Walgreens Chairman and CEO Dave Bernauer. "We won't hesitate to do
anything we can to make this time a little easier for them."
Under Walgreens military leave policy, employees called to active service
receive their full salary, less military pay, for 36 months from the last day
worked. They also have the option of continuing medical, prescription and
dental coverage at active employee rates.
Walgreen Co. (NYSE, Nasdaq: WAG) is the nation's largest drugstore chain
