Statutory Advisory Body to the Secretary of Health and Human Services
on National Health Data, Statistics, and Information Policy
LOUISVILLE, Ky., June 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM) today
announced the appointment of Carol J. McCall, F.S.A., M.A.A.A., to the
National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics (NCVHS). McCall will serve
a four-year term to the 18-member committee.
The NCVHS is the nation's preeminent forum for national policy development
on health statistics and information policy. Statutorily chartered to advise
the Secretary of Health and Human Services on the nation's health data,
statistics, privacy, national health information policy, the NCVHS suggests
strategies for the development of a shared public/private health information
infrastructure that will promote the availability of valid, timely, and
comparable health data.
McCall brings nearly twenty years of experience in the health benefits
industry and related businesses to the NCVHS, with fifteen years at Humana,
serving in various executive and actuarial positions, including vice president
of Pharmacy Management, two years as a consulting actuary, and two years
developing a health informatics company that weds information technology and
knowledge about best practices to provide data capture and decision support at
the point of care. As vice president of Humana's Center for Health Metrics,
McCall has championed the use of unconventional methods to both analyze and
visualize health information, shaped new techniques for predicting which
individuals will be in the greatest need of health guidance in the coming year
and established the first application of complexity theory to understand how
people choose their health benefits.
"I'm excited about the opportunity to influence health information policy
at the national level," said McCall. "The development of a national health
information infrastructure has emerged as a national policy priority, and the
NCVHS should be at the heart of the debates about how that infrastructure will
take shape."
Over its 55-year history, the Committee has stimulated many improvements
in national and international health information. The Committee has been
associated with ground-breaking contributions to disease classification,
health surveys, uniform data sets and other data standards, and has identified
strategies for meeting the data needs of minority and special populations,
mental health, and State and community health, and has been a strong advocate
for the privacy protection of health information. In 1996 the Committee's
charter was revised to reflect the changes to the health data environment
created by electronic health records, broadening its responsibilities to
encompass health information systems and the security and privacy protections
that these systems demand.
"We're happy to see Carol's expertise recognized on a national stage,"
says Humana CEO Michael McCallister. "Carol understands both the vital
importance and hidden power of reliable health data and brings a wealth of
practical experience to national health policy making."
McCall follows Humana Chief Innovation Officer Jonathan Lord, MD, and
Chief Actuary John Bertko, F.S.A., to national advisory appointments. Dr.
Lord was named to the National Advisory Committee for Healthcare Research and
Quality, which advises the Secretary of HHS on national health research
priorities. Mr. Bertko was named in May 2004 to the Medicare Payment Advisory
Commission, which advises Congress on Medicare payment policies.
