Creators of Maven bring world's most popular Java build and release
framework and repository, with 100 million downloads a month, to Eclipse
with m2eclipse
PALO ALTO, Calif., June 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Sonatype, the leader in Java
development infrastructure, today announced that they will contribute their
m2eclipse project, an Eclipse plug-in that tightly integrates Maven and
Eclipse, to the Eclipse Foundation and lead a new Eclipse Technology
Project. The existing project will serve as the starting point for the
Eclipse m2eclipse project. The move shows Sonatype's strong commitment to
open source and to the integration of Eclipse and Maven, combining the
world's most popular IDE with the most popular Java build and release
framework and repository.
Java developers have downloaded more than 2 million copies of Maven to
manage their build process. The Maven central repository is one of the most
active open source repositories in the world with more 100 million Java
artifacts downloaded a month.
"The open source community now provides developers with an integrated
Java development framework that combines the most popular IDE, the most
popular build and release framework, and the largest repository of Java
software," said Jason van Zyl, creator of the Maven Central Repository and
founder of Sonatype. "Since m2eclipse is the de facto standard for Maven
and Eclipse integration, Sonatype is contributing all the code to the open
source community to make both Maven and Eclipse more valuable to
developers."
"Maven and Eclipse are two extremely popular open source tools that
improve efficiency for developers," said Dan Diephouse, software architect
at MuleSource and creator of XFire. "Open source software developers are
thrilled about Sonatype's work to integrate the Maven build framework, the
Eclipse IDE, and the Maven central repository."
Created by Sonatype, m2eclipse (also known as m2e) gives developers the
ability to launch Maven builds and resolve Maven dependencies from inside
Eclipse. Additionally, Maven's popular method of dependency management,
enabled by their use of a project-object model (POM) for all artifacts,
will be brought to the Eclipse platform. m2eclipse will use Eclipse
extensibility mechanisms to extend Maven tools, insuring that all Java
software in the Maven central repository or internal enterprise
repositories can be easily accessed from within Eclipse.
"This is a great addition to the Eclipse community, we feel that easing
the barriers between Maven and Eclipse will be an important integration
point," said Mike Milinkovich, executive director of the Eclipse
Foundation. "We welcome Sonatype's contribution of m2eclipse to the Eclipse
community."
The m2eclipse project is distributed under the Eclipse Public License
(EPL), and will be available from Eclipse by August 2008. The plug-in, as
well as additional information on m2eclipse, is currently available at
