Raytheon Business Unit Attains Software Engineering Institute Level 3 Certification

GARLAND, Texas, July 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Company's Intelligence and
Information Systems operation here recently attained Software Engineering
Institute's (SEI) Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) Maturity Level
3 rating for Systems and Software Engineering using the staged representation
of the CMMI model. The Level 3 rating was the result of an independent
appraisal led by the SEI.
"This rating tells our customers and partners that our Garland operation
successfully manages its processes, and that we're committed to delivering
better solutions to our customers," said Mike Keebaugh, IIS president. "It
also shows the quality and maturity of our processes, and that we can provide
solutions more efficiently and effectively."
The appraisal team was led by Richard Barbour, a SEI-authorized CMMI lead
appraiser, and consisted of nine others including two government customer
representatives. The team conducted interviews with 98 employees and performed
an extensive examination of documentation over a three-week period as part of
determining the Level 3 rating.
This latest achievement follows a long history of process improvement in
Garland starting with the adoption of SEI's Software Capability Maturity Model
in the early 1990's and later adoption of equivalent models for Systems
Engineering.
CMMI is the newest standard for benchmarking the commercial and defense
industry's best practices for product development. Raytheon has been a major
contributor to the development of the CMMI model. CMMI levels are increasingly
used by government agencies and contractors to evaluate the potential for
organizations to produce quality products on time and within budget. The
Maturity Level 3 rating indicates that the defined and documented processes
for developing and maintaining products at Raytheon's Garland facility have
been integrated into Garland's previously existing process documentation and
is institutionalized at the site.
The SEI is a federally funded research and development center sponsored by
the U.S. Department of Defense and operated by Carnegie Mellon University. The
center establishes the reference model against which software development
processes are measured.
Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN), with 2002 sales of $16.8 billion, is an
industry leader in defense, government and commercial electronics, space,
information technology, technical services, and business and special mission
aircraft. With headquarters in Lexington, Mass., Raytheon employs more than
76,000 people worldwide.
