Fire Island July 4 Invasion - Cherry Grove to the Pines - to Focus on Gay Marriage - and to Protest the Upcoming Federal Marriage Amendment

FIRE ISLAND, N.Y., July 3 /PRNewswire/ -- On July 4, the drag queens and
gender bending lesbians will once again hop on a Ferry Boat in Cherry Grove,
Fire Island at around 12:30 PM, to 'invade' the Pines, where almost three
decades ago a man wearing drag was refused service at a restaurant there.
Each Fourth of July, vacationers and residents of Fire Island Pines sing 'God
Bless America' and pledge allegiance to the flag, just before they hail the
Queens, who arrive between 12:30 and 1:30.
This year will be different. The theme will be a wedding ceremony, but
the bridal party will take out signs saying 'dontamend.com, stop the Federal
Marriage Amendment.'
Robin Tyler, the Executive Director of DontAmend.com, will participate in
the July 4 2004 invasion, dressed as a soldier.
"I am going to 'cross dress' dress as a male soldier on July 4th because
the radical right has declared war on the gay community. For the first time
in U.S. history, other than prohibition, they are attempting to gut our
constitution by taking rights away from a minority. What better day to
protest than on Independence Day?"
Ms. Tyler and her lifepartner Diane Olson are spending the weekend on Fire
Island to participate in the invasion. On Feb. 26, they became the first
couple to sue for equal marriage rights in the State of California. Diane's
grandfather was Culbert Levy Olson, the first Democratic Governor of
California, who ran and won on the platform 'Separation of Church and State.'
