AURORA, Colo., July 3, 2007 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Company's (NYSE:
RTN) Intelligence and Information Systems (IIS) business has been selected
as part of a University of California at San Diego (UCSD)-led team to
design and construct information technology and networking capability for
the Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI). The program was awarded by the
Joint Oceanographic Institutions, Inc.
Raytheon IIS will assist the UCSD team in creating the blueprint for a
digital infrastructure that will allow ocean observatories to collect,
process and transmit data 24/7.
The initial award is for $29 million over six years, with total funding
reaching $42 million over the course of the 11-year project term.
Raytheon's role is valued at nearly $2.5 million and includes the provision
of systems engineering support to ensure consistency in the evolving
Integrated Ocean Observing System architecture.
The OOI Cyberinfrastructure is the significant research component of
the emerging Integrated Ocean Observing System and is the contributory
element for the United States to the Global Earth Observation System of
Systems (GEOSS), a global initiative that will revolutionize the
understanding of earth and how it works. Upon completion, GEOSS will help
all nations involved produce and manage their information in a way that
benefits the environment as well as humanity.
Historically, earth observation systems work in isolation, limiting the
ability to analyze and understand the interaction of measurements of air,
water, and land made on the ground, from the air, or from space. "By
