-- BellSouth and TCGA partner to get refurbished computers in the hands of
students and families in need --
ATLANTA, July 6 /PRNewswire/ -- BellSouth (NYSE: BLS) announced today
that the BellSouth Foundation has awarded a $50,000 grant to TECH CORPS
Georgia, Inc. to support high school students and their families in getting
access to the technology they need to succeed. TECH CORPS Georgia (TCGA) is
a nonprofit organization, based in Atlanta, that provides computers and
training to children and families in lower-income communities and to the
nonprofits that serve those communities.
"Computer resources that no longer meet the needs of a business or an
individual can still prove to be a valuable tool when put in the right
hands" said Ron Frieson, president - BellSouth Georgia. "Through our
partnership with TECH CORPS Georgia, BellSouth is able to offer donated
computers and training to students and their families who may not otherwise
have an opportunity to own a personal computer."
In partnership with TECH CORPS Georgia, BellSouth employees and other
volunteers will refurbish computers from BellSouth as well as the larger
community. Every year, thousands of retired computers and electronics are
discarded into landfills. BellSouth's goal is to make sure that reusable
equipment ends up in the hands of those in need.
"We are pleased that BellSouth has joined the effort to promote
responsible reuse of computers to benefit individuals in our community who
want, but may not be able to afford technology," said Niyati Desai,
Director, TECH CORPS Georgia. "BellSouth's financial commitment, coupled
with the time, energy and talent of their volunteers, will allow us to
expand our reach and provide valuable technology resources to more people
in the community."
Working with TECH CORPS Georgia, as well as Hands On Atlanta, BellSouth
volunteers train students and their families on basic computer skills.
Those who successfully complete training receive a donated, refurbished
computer. This volunteer program builds on the success of BellSouth's
partnership with the Carver School of Technology. Both programs are
components of the BellSouth 20/20 Vision for Education initiative which is
designed to bring technology-based learning opportunities to select
communities in the BellSouth region. For more information about BellSouth

TCGA accepts donated personal computers, monitors, printers, scanners
(and related equipment) at its Free Bytes Computer Recycling and
Refurbishment Program located at 229 Margaret Street in Atlanta. For
