Signet Laboratories Releases ABP-26(TM), the First Predictive Diagnostic to Combat High Sepsis Mortality Rates

Pioneer in evidence-based medicine creates new and highly effective assay for
detecting early signs of sepsis, severe sepsis and septic shock

DEDHAM, Mass., July 7 /PRNewswire/ -- As part of its commitment to battle
infectious disease, Signet Laboratories, Inc., a pioneer in evidence-based
medicine (EviMed), today announced the release of ABP-26(TM), a predictive
diagnostic for detecting early signs of sepsis, to help prevent onset and curb
mortality rates.
According to Dr. Richard D. Gill, President and CEO of Signet, "A major
contributory factor to the high mortality rate of sepsis (16%), severe sepsis
(20%) and septic shock (46%) is the absence of laboratory tests to detect
early signs of the disease.  Sepsis remains very difficult to detect;
physicians base their assessments primarily on observations of specific
physiological symptoms. For this reason sepsis conditions are often
incorrectly attributed to other causes."
"ABP-26(TM) is the first viable predictive diagnostic for this purpose, as
it relies on observed correlations between the degree of sepsis and the level
of ABP-26 in specimen samples," he said. "We're confident it will prove to be
a reliable clinical weapon in the fight against sepsis."
Adenosine Deaminase Binding Protein (ABP-26) is a single chain type II
transmembrane 120,000 dalton molecule of 766 amino acids which acts as a
serine exopeptidase that cleaves X-proline dipeptides from the N-terminus of
polypeptides. The diagnosis of sepsis by measurement of ABP-26 (a.k.a.
dipeptidyl peptidase IV, EC 3.4.14.5.) is based on observed correlations
between the degree of sepsis and the level of ABP-26 in urine. Two monoclonal
antibodies are used in an ELISA format to detect ABP-26 released from kidney
brush border epithelial cells into the urine. The format of the assay is based
on a sandwich ELISA. The measurement of ABP-26 using this assay provides the
earliest quantitative indicator available of sepsis.

    About Signet Laboratories, Inc.
Signet Laboratories, Inc. is a pioneering evidence-based medicine (EviMed)
company that is committed to developing and commercializing predictive
diagnostics and preventive drugs and therapies for critical disease states.
Evidence-based medicine is the treatment of diseases prior to their full
manifestation, with the goal of reducing their occurrence and preventing
disease progression by early identification of patients with increased risk
factors.
Drawing on long experience in developing diagnostic assays and antibodies
for disease detection and treatment, Signet's mission is to create novel
diagnostics and drugs for patients at risk for cancer, sepsis and renal
failure (SARF), neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's, Parkinson's
and Huntington's, and prion diseases such as "Mad Cow" and vCJD.
In addition to diagnostics, drugs and therapies, Signet offers a complete
product line of over 800 manufactured antibodies, ELISA kits, detection
products and accessories in an FDA registered facility. Signet products are
