DARMSTADT, Germany, July 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Merck KGaA, in response to
numerous media inquiries, wishes to clarify that it has no connection with
Merck & Co. of Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, or its subsidiary Medco Health
Solutions Inc. The media questions concerned a Merck & Co. filing with the
U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) regarding Medco's accounting
procedures.
The historic roots of both companies are the same and began in Darmstadt,
Germany, more than 333 years ago. As the business grew into a pharmaceutical
company, a Merck branch was founded in New York in 1891. This branch was
confiscated by the U.S. government during World War I and in 1917 became the
independent company Merck & Co., Inc. The two companies are no longer
associated with each other but still share the same name. Merck KGaA owns
world-wide rights to the name except in North America, where it uses EMD.
Merck & Co., Inc., uses the name in North America and MSD in the rest of the
world.
