American Eagle Outfitters, Inc. (Nasdaq: AEOS) today announced that total
sales for the five-week period ended July 6, 2002 increased 11.1% to
$121.7 million, compared to $109.6 million for the five-week period ended
July 7, 2001. Total sales for the period include $7.7 million from the
Bluenotes/Thriftys operation, compared to $8.4 million for the corresponding
period last year.
Comparable store sales for the American Eagle Outfitters stores declined
3.2% for the June period. Consolidated comparable store sales, which include
American Eagle and Bluenotes/Thriftys stores, decreased 3.9% for the month
compared to the corresponding period ended July 7, 2001. Bluenotes/Thriftys
comparable store sales declined 11.6% in June compared to last year.
Total sales for the twenty-two week period ended July 6, 2002 increased
10.1% to $486.7 million, compared to $441.8 million for the twenty-two week
period ended July 7, 2001. Total sales for the period include $30.6 million
from the Bluenotes/Thriftys operation, compared to $35.0 million for the
corresponding period last year.
Comparable store sales for the American Eagle Outfitters stores declined
5.0% for the twenty-two week period ended July 6, 2002. Consolidated
comparable store sales, which include American Eagle and Bluenotes/Thriftys
stores, decreased 5.8% for the twenty-two week period compared to the
corresponding period last year. Bluenotes/Thriftys comparable store sales
declined 15.6% for the period compared to the corresponding period last year.
Due to lower-than-planned sales in May and June and based on current
expectations for July sales, the Company currently anticipates second quarter
earnings to be in the range of $0.14 to $0.17 per share.
