Mallinckrodt's Nellcor Oximetry Dramatization Earns High Honors At U.S. International Film and Video Festival

Sequel to Award-Winning Video Draws Record Crowds
                    At U.S. and International Conferences

ST. LOUIS, July 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Mallinckrodt Inc. (NYSE: MKG) and its
Nellcor oximetry business received top honors at the 2000 U.S. International
Film and Video Festival for the groundbreaking dramatization Extreme Measures,
which demonstrates the vital role Nellcor oximeters play in patient care. The
video was awarded a Silver Screen award in the Specialty Promotions: Video
Support for Live Presentation category at a gala dinner in Chicago on June 22.
Produced in 1999, Extreme Measures depicts three critical patient care
scenarios in which the accuracy and reliability of Nellcor oximetry are shown
playing a crucial role in patient care. The video was an integral part of live
demonstrations and served as the centerpiece of Mallinckrodt's oximetry
presence at numerous clinical conferences around the United States in 1999.
"Extreme Measures demonstrates the vital role pulse oximetry plays in the
daily lives of our customers on the front lines of patient care," said Chris
Jones, Mallinckrodt's director of marketing, Nellcor oximetry business. "For
the past 20 years clinicians have come to trust the Nellcor name for quality,
reliability and accuracy. This year, we have created a new video that brings
customers on a journey from their everyday lives to the top of the world."
The new video, "Extreme Measures 2000-From One Extreme to Another"
premiered to record crowds at the American Association of Critical Care Nurses
National Teaching Institute in Orlando on May 22 and the World Congress of
Anesthesia in Montreal on June 5. The 11-minute feature demonstrates how the
world's top adventurers use Nellcor oximetry as they push the human body to
its maximum limits and how this same technology is used to care for the most
critically ill patients.
The film features footage shot on Mt. Everest by explorer David Breashears
for the NOVA series "Into the Death Zone," in which he used pulse oximeters to
monitor his oxygen levels while climbing the world's tallest peak without
external oxygen. Also featured is long-range balloonist Kevin Uliassi who
used Nellcor oximeters during his two attempts to circumnavigate the world in
a hot air balloon-without the aid of a pressurized cabin or pressure suit.
In comparison to these extreme conditions, the film also demonstrates how
the latest Nellcor technology in the N-395 pulse oximeter can be used in
extreme clinical conditions to deal with the challenges of monitoring during
motion and poor perfusion.
"Accurate, reliable oximetry performance in difficult conditions is
essential in each of the clinical situations shown in the film," said Jones.
"Extreme Measures and Extreme Measures 2000 demonstrate the importance of
Nellcor technology in challenging situations. We're pleased that these films
have captured both our customers' imaginations and professional accolades."
Recognition by the U.S. International Film and Video Festival represents
one of the world's highest honors in audio-visual competition. Judges
received over 1,600 entries from 30 countries in 1999 alone.
