Students Earn Achievement Awards from IABC/Detroit

DETROIT, July 12 /PRNewswire/ -- The International Association of Business
Communicators (IABC) Detroit chapter recently recognized undergraduate
students at two local institutions for outstanding communications
achievements. The Student Achievement Awards presented by Leah Reynolds, who
directs IABC/Detroit's Academic and Community Relations portfolio, were part
of the chapter's 23rd annual Renaissance Awards ceremony, held June 15, 2004.
"This award recognizes the best work of undergraduate communication
students in the southeast Michigan area," said 2003-2004 IABC/Detroit
president Cindy Orlandi, APR, ABC. "The entries earned high marks from the
judges, who are professional business communicators in IABC District 7 that
includes Ohio and Indiana as well as Michigan."
Students at the College for Creative Studies earned an Award of Excellence
for a video they created showcasing an exhibit at the Detroit Institute of
Arts (DIA). The DIA commissioned the ten-member student team from the
Animation and Digital Media department to develop a program promoting the
Olnik/Spanu Collection of Murano Glass exhibit.
The ten students are: Karen Barnett, Pierre Cerrato, Angela Warren, Matt
Bone, Kwi-Im Enwright, Claire Ford, Marie Granger, Sean Hages, Ralph Sevelius
and Jeremiah Strackbein. Their instructor Galen Chandler oversaw the project.
The class assignment provided hands-on experience in project management,
including concept skills, group collaboration, execution and delivery. Each
student completed a unique treatment for the project, based on the knowledge
of the client, and learnings in their fields of study.
The judges agreed, "the final product is a powerful message and engages
the aural and visual senses and emotions of the viewer."
Meaghan McClure, a University of Michigan-Dearborn student, earned an
Award of Merit in the same competition for a class project that required her
to create a business proposal for a photography studio. McClure used
meticulous research to define her target market, identify a suitable location
and determine the products/services the studio would provide. She combined
demographic information and personal interviews to put together her plan.
Judges were impressed with the thoroughness of the plan and the
presentation of the final report: "Excellent research and well-prepared
project! In-depth analysis/planning should make for a truly complete plan."
McClure's instructor at UM-Dearborn was Rebecca Wyatt.
Students received their awards June 15, 2004 at the IABC/Detroit
Renaissance Awards program. Award of Excellence winners share a $250 stipend.
All winners will receive one-year student memberships to the IABC/Detroit
chapter.
IABC/Detroit, one of the largest chapters of the 13,000-member
International Association of Business Communicators, has more than 250
professional communicators. The chapter, which includes members in Michigan,
Ohio and Canada, holds monthly professional development programs; sponsors
workshops; offers job referral services, informative publications, award
programs, accreditation programs and the opportunity to meet and network with
other communicators. For information on IABC/Detroit, visit
