FARNBOROUGH, England, July 14 /PRNewswire/ -- FARNBOROUGH AIR SHOW --
Pratt & Whitney's patented EcoPower(R) engine wash service has helped
airlines based in the United Kingdom eliminate an estimated 12 million
pounds of carbon dioxide emissions and four million pounds of fuel
consumption, saving £1 million British Pounds ($2 million), by allowing jet
engines to operate more efficiently. Pratt & Whitney is a United
Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX) company.
In the past three years, approximately 150 EcoPower(R) washes have been
performed for several U.K.-based airlines, including Virgin Atlantic,
Jet2.com, EasyJet and ThompsonFly at six airports throughout the country:
Brize Norton (BZZ), Leeds (LBA), London (LGW, LHR and LTN) and Nottingham
(EMA).
"We're optimistic that EcoPower engine washes in the U.K. will continue
to grow at the strong rate we've seen," said Jim Keenan, senior vice
president and general manager, Pratt & Whitney Global Service Partners.
"Pratt & Whitney started providing EcoPower engine washes on Virgin
Atlantic's Boeing 747-400 Gatwick fleet in 2007, and under the current
contract can wash CF6-80C2 engines on Virgin Atlantic's 747 fleet through
the end of 2008."
EcoPower(R) washes reduce engine fuel burn by as much as 1.2 percent,
eliminate three pounds of carbon dioxide emissions for every pound of fuel
saved, and decrease exhaust gas temperature by as much as 15 degrees
Celsius, improving performance and increasing the amount of time an engine
can stay on wing.
"The mix of environmental awareness and emphasis on operational
efficiency creates a strong business case for our EcoPower service," Keenan
added.
The EcoPower(R) service uses a closed-loop system with pure, atomized
water to wash aircraft engines, thus avoiding potential contaminant runoff.
The system is more effective and much faster than traditional engine
washing processes. Issued patents and applications cover various aspects of
EcoPower(R) engine wash services in several countries relating to features
such as water atomization, the closed-loop system, effluent collection
process and purification techniques.
Pratt & Whitney Global Service Partners has completed more than 2,500
EcoPower(R) washes for roughly 50 customers in 10 countries, and is a total
service provider for engines made by Pratt & Whitney, International Aero
Engines, General Electric, Rolls-Royce and CFMI. In addition to engine
overhaul and repair services, GSP provides customers with improved engine
performance and increased asset value through a portfolio of services
including line maintenance, engine monitoring and diagnostics,
environmentally friendly on-wing water washes, leased engines, custom
engine service programs, and new and repaired parts.
