Electric Lightwave Tops AT&T in ISP Internet Backbone Market Share, Based On Boardwatch Magazine and Keynote Systems Survey

Company Also Ranks 14th in Data Comm's Top 25 ISPs; Cleveland-based ISP
Supports Electric Lightwave as a Premier Internet Backbone Provider

VANCOUVER, Wash., July 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Electric Lightwave Inc.
(Nasdaq: ELIX), a leading integrated communications provider, upholds its
claim as a top Internet backbone player once again.
Of the 43 wholesale Internet Service Providers (ISPs) profiled in
Boardwatch Magazine's Directory of ISPs, Electric Lightwave ranked fifth,
topping AT&T with 472 backbone market share connections. And despite merger
and acquisition trends, Electric Lightwave is among the rising "Next Gen"
telcos that are dominating a larger portion of the wholesale bandwidth
business, according to Bill McCarthy, editor-in-chief at Boardwatch Magazine
(http://www.isplist.com).
"Electric Lightwave consistently ranks among the top Internet backbone
providers in the country," said McCarthy.
"We see ourselves as a leader in our own right," said Dave Sharkey,
president and chief operating officer at Electric Lightwave. "This
recognition supports our capability to provide mission critical applications
to a larger number of content providers."
The company also ranked 14th in Data Communications' Top 25 ISPs,
servicing the most Web sites for marketing and corporate information. And
based on these findings, Electric Lightwave is second in providing backbone
for this type of information (http://www.data.com).
Cleveland-based Ameriserv.net, an official Keynote Systems testing
facility, one of 200 located throughout the world, backs Electric Lightwave's
claims.
"As a retail ISP, it is imperative to have a dependable Internet backbone
provider that can sustain heavy Internet traffic," said Greg Olson, president
of Ameriserv.net. "We chose Electric Lightwave strictly based upon the
company's ability to test favorably within the top five wholesale ISPs in the
world for price, performance and reliability."
