Student Select Health Insurance Offers Affordable Coverage For College Students, Says Fortis Health

More Flexible Than School-Sponsored Plans, Better Benefits

MILWAUKEE, July 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Fortis Health advises college students
and their parents to review current health insurance coverage before the new
semester begins. Students entering college could be without the benefit of
their parents' health insurance, risking their health and financial well-
being.
To meet the needs of college students, Fortis Health has designed Student
Select, a guaranteed renewable, year-round health insurance policy for full-
time college students. Student Select is designed for single students who are
no longer covered under their parents' health plans or as an alternative to
college-sponsored plans.
"Students have very few choices when it comes to health insurance," says
Steven Keller, Director of Specialty Products at Fortis Health. "Student
Select provides better coverage than most school-sponsored plans, at a
comparable rate. Students are covered year round, not just during the school
year, and they have the option of renewing the policy after graduation."
Student Select is designed to be affordable for parents and students --
policyholders can select the payment mode that best fits their needs -- and
they can adjust the cost of coverage by choosing a lower or higher deductible.
For example, a 20-year-old Illinois resident attending a Wisconsin University
could expect to pay $588 per year with a $500 deductible.
The plan provides a $1 million maximum and up to $100,000 for each illness
or injury, compared to most school-sponsored plans which typically only offer
up to $25,000 of coverage. Under Student Select, the policyholder can also
choose any doctor or hospital. And, unlike college-sponsored plans, students
can carry the insurance with them if they transfer schools.
Keller says that in the event of an accident such as a broken leg, a
student without insurance could incur charges around the $10,000 mark. "It's
important to protect against this type of financial risk, so students and
their parents aren't faced with long-term debt that can set them back for
years," he notes.
Student Select is also designed for students who continue education in a
graduate degree program on a full-time basis. The plan covers individual
college students only and does not offer dependent coverage.
