affiliate of Florida Power & Light Company, today announced the availability
of Power Surge Protection for FPL customers. Power Surge Protection is an
insurance service offered to provide an easy way to repair or replace home
electronics and general appliances damaged due to power surges or lightning
strikes.

According to the National Weather Service, the Southeastern United States,
and especially Florida, has the highest frequency of lightning anywhere in the
country. "This means residents of Florida are at increased risk of having
their home appliances damaged by lightning strikes," said Dennis Brandt, vice
president of FPL Energy Services.
Power Surge Protection covers the homeowner for damage that might take
place as a result of a powerful electric surge that may not be countered by
standard surge protection devices such as plug-in equipment. Power Surge
Protection will reimburse the insured for the cost of repair or replacement
for covered losses, up to the maximum of the policy, regardless of other
coverage, such as a homeowner's insurance policy.
"Power surges caused by lightning can damage televisions, computers and
other expensive home equipment," said Brandt. "Surges can enter through
cable, telephone lines and, although less likely, through electric lines,
too," he said.
Power Surge Protection coverage amounts are available from $1,000 up to
$10,000. Costs for coverage start at $2.50 per month up to $25 per month for
the maximum coverage. For added convenience, the premium is added to the
electric bill.
Assurant Company, a division of American Bankers Insurance Company of
Florida, makes this service available to FPL customers for FPL Energy
Services. "Power Surge Protection is different from other insurance coverage.
For example, standard homeowner policies may not cover damage due to power
surges and lightning strikes, or may include a high deductible," said Ken
Furlow, vice president of utility channels for Assurant Group. "Power Surge
Protection, covers the total replacement, up to the policy's maximum, of
damaged equipment at market value with no deductible," he said.
