MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., July 21 /PRNewswire/ -- The Sun-Netscape Alliance
(Alliance) reported today increased momentum for its Internet infrastructure
and e-commerce application software in its first 100 days in operation with
over 300 customers choosing Alliance software to power their Internet
businesses, including over 40 first time Alliance customers. The addition of
these customers reaffirms the Sun-Netscape Alliance's role as a leading
provider of the most complete and best-in-class infrastructure and e-commerce
application software for companies competing in today's Net Economy.
To date, the Alliance has enabled hundreds of companies to move their
business processes online and scale rapidly to meet the demands of customers,
partners and suppliers including: Audi, Bank of America, Bell Atlantic, Day-
Timer Digital, Inc., drkoop.com, Inc., FDX, First Union Corp., France Telecom,
GTE, Hong Kong Telecom, John Hancock, KeyCorp, Lockheed Martin, MCI WorldCom,

The Alliance also continues to support its Preferred Integrators
initiative, an innovative effort with Global Systems Integrators including

In the first 100 days the Alliance has also put the management and
engineering team in place to help ensure its future success. The Alliance has
named Bud Tribble, Md., Ph.D. as chief technology officer. Dr. Tribble has
served as vice president of architecture and technology for the consumer and
embedded division at Sun, co-founded NeXT Computer, Inc., and lead the
software engineering group at Apple Computer, Inc. during the development of
the Macintosh computer.
Alliance Announces iPlanet Product Brand
In related news, the Sun-Netscape Alliance announced today new marketing
and sales programs to help ensure continued momentum for the Alliance's
products and services. The Sun-Netscape Alliance introduced iPlanet(TM) as its
new product brand and unveiled a marketing campaign designed to increase
awareness of the Alliance among business and information technology (IT)
decision-makers. The Alliance also announced the iPlanet Customer Program. The
program will offer customers a host of opportunities including Customer
Council membership, access to the enterprise customer Extranet (Insight),
strategic executive briefings and product training. The program also includes
joint-marketing opportunities such as showcasing the customer on the new Web
site and placing stories on their successes in the media.
By drawing on the complementary strengths of both America Online and Sun,

GTE announced its Network Commerce Platform for outsourcing services last
week that will rent Sun-Netscape Alliance e-commerce applications to small and
medium-sized businesses. This is the first announcement in a larger
relationship between GTE, the Sun-Netscape Alliance and Sun Microsystems. GTE
is the premier member of the iPlanet Customer Program. "The Sun-Netscape

and services we require to power our application hosting service," said Chuck

drkoop.com, the number one dedicated health care Internet site according
to Media Metrix, announced a 4 year, $89 million agreement for software and
services from the AOL and Sun-Netscape Alliance. drkoop.com will use Alliance
software products to power its Internet site. The health related content on
this Web site will be served to viewers across all AOL brands, including AOL,
Compuserve, and Netscape Netcenter.
