WASHINGTON, July 21 /PRNewswire/ -- President George W. Bush today thanked
Project HOPE medical volunteers from 37 states for their dedication to help
restore a region overwhelmed by two natural disasters.
During a volunteer recognition event on the South Lawn of the White House,
the President recognized the accomplishments of the 210 volunteers who
answered the call to service following the December 26 tsunami and March 28
earthquake in Indonesia.
"The Project HOPE volunteers served not only as healers and healthcare
providers, but as ambassadors to the world," said John P. Howe III, M.D.,
President and CEO of Project HOPE. "Through this mission we saved lives,
repaired families and restored the capacity of the local physicians and nurses
to care for their fellow citizens."
The Project HOPE volunteers devoted hours of time to provide healthcare
services in support of the U.S. Navy's Operation Unified Assistance on the
USNS Mercy. The medical team evaluated and treated more than 49,500 patients
and performed more than 97,000 medical procedures ashore and aboard the
hospital ship in the aftermath of the disasters.
