Changes Made in Jewel-Osco Management Team

    MELROSE PARK, Ill., July 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Expanding the responsibilities
of four-key executive officers with almost 100-years of management experience,
Chicagoland's leading food and drug combination retailer continues to
strengthen its' commitment to the communities it serves.
    Jewel-Osco chief-executive-officer, Greg Josefowicz, said the moves put in
place a diverse team of industry veterans uniquely qualified to lead the
company into the next century.
    He said Dave Gillis, Eileen Kowalski, Nancy Chagares, and Mike Spinozzi
will anchor the efforts of Jewel-Osco and American Stores Company to provide
the highest quality of service and selection.

committed to bringing our best effort to the communities we serve," Josefowicz
said.  "Few food retail companies can match this groups' understanding of our
business."
    He said the 37-years of retail experience that Dave Gillis brings to the
position of senior vice-president of operations is rooted in Jewel-Osco's
commitment to the partnership between food and drug stores.
    Gillis has held a variety of management assignments for Jewel-Osco,
including assistant store manager, college recruiter, advertising manager, and
district manager.  He has been a company officer since 1990, serving as an
Osco Drug vice-president for the inter-mountain and Chicagoland regions, and
most recently as vice-president of Jewel-Osco north region operations.  He
succeeds Peter Lynch, who was promoted to executive vice-president and general
manager of Acme Markets in Philadelphia.
    Gillis began his career with Osco Drug Stores in 1961 as a pharmacist
after graduating from South Dakota State University.
    He is succeeded as north regional vice-president by Eileen Kowalski, who
most recently served as vice-president of finance and administration for the
Melrose Park, Illinois based retailer.
    Kowalski began her career with Jewel-Osco in 1973 as a cashier while
attending DePaul University, where she earned an accounting degree.  She also
holds a master's degree in business administration from Northern Illinois
University.
    As the new vice-president of food service strategy for Jewel Osco's parent
company - American Stores Company - Nancy Chagares will share her expertise in
home meal replacement with all American Stores divisions.
    Chagares started working with Jewel in 1978 as a bakery clerk while
studying for her masters degree in education.
    Her previous responsibilities include those of a grocery, deli, and
category manager.  From 1995 until her most recent promotion she served as
vice-president of bakery, deli and floral merchandising.
    Currently the vice-president of meat and FarmStand merchandising, Mike
Spinozzi will now assume responsibilities for bakery, deli, and floral.  He
has also served as a director of grocery merchandising, and sales manager at
Jewel-Osco.  He began his career at Jewel-Osco in 1982 at Jewel-T Discount
Grocery in Orlando, Florida.
    Spinozzi said his goal is to help ensure that Jewel-Osco's perishable
marketing strategy continues to be responsive to consumer needs.
    Spinozzi holds a marketing degree from the college of Saint Francis, and a
masters degree in business administration from Northern Illinois University.
    Jewel-Osco contributes over $1-million annually to support charitable and
community organizations focusing in three main areas; food and nutrition,
health, and education.  For almost 100-years, Jewel-Osco has demonstrated its
commitment to the community through its charitable contributions and community
outreach programs such as neighborhood festivals and health fairs.
    Jewel-Osco operates 184 stores in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa and Wisconsin.
Of those, 154 are in combination with Osco Drug.  Jewel also operates 79
stand-alone Osco Drug Stores in Chicagoland and the Milwaukee area.  The
