UML For Database Design, Published by Addison-Wesley, Addresses Complete
Database Design from a Unified Modeling Language Perspective

    DENVER, July 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Rational User Conference --
Rational Software (Nasdaq: RATL), the e-development company(TM), today
announced the release of UML For Database Design, written by Eric J. Naiburg
and Robert A. Maksimchuk of Rational Software. UML For Database Design is the
industry's first book on how to leverage the Unified Modeling Language (UML)
for database design from inception to implementation.
Published by Addison-Wesley, the book provides an overview of UML, and
details the process of UML-based database modeling and design. Readers will
find a full case study running throughout the book, with diagrams for building
the database design from requirements through implementation, including how
data modeling with the UML can be tied into the Rational Unified Process.
This book brings the number of software development books written by Rational
thought leaders to more than 55.
UML For Database Design is structured around the database design process:
business use case modeling, business object modeling, database requirements
definition, analysis and preliminary design, and detailed design and
deployment of the database. For each phase of development, the book describes
the overall objectives and workflow of that phase, the status of the case
study, the relevant UML constructs, and the nuts and bolts of database
modeling and design with the UML. Drawing on their extensive industry
experience, Naiburg and Maksimchuk reveal the challenges faced by database
development teams, lessons learned, and pointers for success.
UML, the standard graphical notation for modeling business and software
application needs, has emerged as an effective modeling tool for database
design. When used as a common modeling language for the many facets of system
development, the UML can serve as a unifying framework that facilitates the
integration of database models with the rest of a system design.
"Eric and Robert have organized this book along a lifecycle flow, leading
the reader from conceptual, to logical, and then to physical database design,"
said Grady Booch, chief scientist, Rational Software. "By focusing on a
single, very comprehensive case study, coupled with important observations for
the database team highlighted in the sidebars, the authors offer guidance that
can help your software development team succeed."
"With this book, Eric and I feel that we have addressed the subject
realistically as well as pragmatically and that this is the first published
resource of its kind to fully utilize the UML for database design," said
Robert Maksimchuk, data modeling evangelist, Rational Software. "There are no
contrived, artificial examples using only three or four UML classes. This
book uses a robust, full lifecycle, realistic case study to enlighten the
readers as to what they will experience in the real world and help them avoid
the pitfalls."
