Reliant Energy to Award Eight $1,000 Scholarships to Houston-Area High School Student Athletes

HOUSTON, July 24 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Reliant Energy will award
eight $1,000 scholarships to Houston-area high school student athletes by
Sept. 7 as part of their Scholarship for Champions -- Building Strong Minds
and Bodies program.
"We want to provide financial assistance to help capable Houston-area
high school students who have shown outstanding leadership in athletics
pursue their dreams," said Glen Stancil, Reliant Energy vice president,
Houston Residential.
Nominations will be accepted through August 30, 2006, and must be made
online at http://www.reliant.com/Texans by a teacher, coach or
administrator from the student's school. Nominators should be prepared to
list examples of how the nominated student athletes have displayed
leadership and conducted themselves in an ethical manner. Reliant Energy
and the Houston Texans Youth Advisory Council -- a group of local community
leaders and high school administrators and coaches -- will work together
during the selection process. Winners will be selected by Sept. 7.
In addition to demonstrating leadership both on and off the playing
field or court, winning students also must have solid academic achievement
(3.0 on a 4.0 scale) and extracurricular pursuits.
"As a graduate of Notre Dame, I know first-hand that a strong education
and participation in athletics is a perfect combination for success," said
Texans defensive lineman, Anthony Weaver. "I am excited about my
association with such a worthy scholarship program."
In addition to the $1,000 scholarship, winners will participate in a
pregame on-field presentation at a Texans game and will be honored at the
Houston Football Dinner in early 2007, where Houston Texans players, as
well as college and high school football players, are recognized. The event
is sponsored by the Touchdown Club of Houston.
