Sun Microsystems and Improv Technologies to Produce Next Wave of Digital Media Content on the Internet

Sun's Java Technologies Provide Basis for Improv's New Digital Media Authoring
Software That is Expected to Help Deliver Anytime, Anywhere Digital Content
                                   Creation

NEW ORLEANS, SIGGRAPH 2000, July 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Sun Microsystems, Inc.
(Nasdaq: SUNW) today announced that Java technology-based digital media
editing solutions are expected to soon be available from your desktop or from
the palm of your hand. Improv Technologies' powerful new digital media
authoring software utilizes the full range of Java technologies, including
Java 3D, Java 2D, Java Advanced Imaging, and Java Media Framework.
Ultimately, Improv's digital media software, including eContent Creation
Tools, will allow developers to create truly dynamic and interactive web sites
that are accessible even via hand-held, wireless network devices.
Improv Technologies' software allows web developers design, edit and
integrate all forms of multimedia, including 3-D and 2-D animation, streaming
audio and video, bitmap and vector graphics, and text with complete
interactivity in an internet-based collaborative work environment. Since all
lower-level coding is eliminated, it's easy for professionals, artists, and
amateurs to author the more sophisticated forms of content that were
previously the exclusive domain of programmers and software engineers. At the
same time, the advanced architecture is designed to give developers the
flexibility to introduce custom features and functionality.
"Sun is clearly committed to its Java technologies and that commitment is
enabling company's like Improv Technologies to develop innovative,
cross-platform digital media applications. From enabling enhanced, fully
interactive online experiences for consumers to the creation of superior
quality animation and scientific visualization, we are seeing the emergence of
a new generation of applications that will power the new economy," said
Athomas Goldberg, president and chief technology officer, Improv Technologies.
"Improv's new software and the technologies upon which it has been
developed will make a powerful impact on the delivery of digital content
creation from anywhere, anytime and from any device. This state-of-the-art
technology is designed to allow businesses to build more competitive eCommerce
sites while realizing tremendous cost and time savings in building those
sites. At the same time, consumers visiting those web sites may enjoy a more
interactive and relevant web experience," said Fred Kohout, director of
product marketing, Workstation Products Group at Sun Microsystems.
A Beta version of Improv's digital media authoring software is expected to
be available in late 2000.
