New initiative will help bring 3D to the mainstream Web
SIGGRAPH 2000, NEW ORLEANS, July 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Laying the foundation
for the Web's ultimate multimedia experience, NxView Technologies has
committed to integrating its 3D rendering solutions with new technologies that
Macromedia and Intel are co-developing to bring interactive, streaming 3D
capabilities online.
The new initiative will bring NxView's visually rich, 3D, Web-based
technologies and solutions to a future version of the Macromedia Shockwave
Player that will be enhanced with Intel's Internet 3D Graphic technology.
This will enable the Shockwave Player to support the next generation of 3D e-
commerce, immersive entertainment and e-business applications -- whether on
the Internet, Intranets or Extranets.
"For interactive 3D to become viable on the Web, it must enrich the users'
experience and it must be easy to use," said Myles A. Owens III, Chairman and
CEO of NxView. "Today, however, there are several 3D players and plug-ins
that make the online experience confusing and unmanageable. Ubiquity is
needed. We're proud to be a part of this effort that best fulfills the
promise of 3D on the Web."
NxView's development efforts initially focus on the integration of
NxView(TM) 3DSpeedDraw, its software rendering technology, which will be at
the foundation of the future Shockwave Player. This technology will allow
users to view and interact with 3D content without having to rely on hardware
to support 3D images. Since the images are being drawn from the software and
not the hardware more online users can easily access 3D content.
"With the combined efforts of NxView, Intel, and Macromedia, the future
Shockwave Player will offer the most robust solution for 3D content online --
offering better performance, ubiquity, and features than any other 3D
technology available," said Diane Rogers, vice president of product management
for Macromedia. "With more than 130 million installed users today, and our
player's auto-update feature, this future player will become the standard for
any Web-based 3D application."
"Our goal is to broaden the use of 3D content on the Web from niche
applications to widespread adoption," said David Ryan, director of technology
marketing at the Intel Architecture Labs. "NxView's software rendering
technology will be an important component in bringing 3D to more end users.
The future Shockwave Player will bring enhanced interactive graphic
capabilities online. For example, employees at an automotive manufacturer
learn to identify the parts and assembly order of a wheel and base with just-
in-time training, do-it-yourself home repairs are done more accurately and
quickly when items needed are correctly identified from a realistic visual
online image, and customer support representatives can cut down on telephone
support time by interactively demonstrating to users how to upgrade a product,
such as adding memory to a PC.
