Sun Microsystems and MediaFile Team to Deliver Customizable Broadcasting Solution

Leading German Broadcast Systems Integrator Uses Sun StorEdge Media Central's
Open, Flexible Platform to Create High-performance Applications for Broadcast
                                 Environments

NEW ORLEANS, July 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW)
and Berlin-based MediaFile GmbH today announced that they have teamed to
deliver a customizable broadcast solution to the German broadcast market.
MediaFile, a leading systems integrator in the German media market, has chosen
the Sun StorEdge(TM) Media Central broadcast platform for integration in its
customers' broadcast environments.
The Sun StorEdge Media Central platform, which combines Sun Enterprise(TM)
servers and Sun StorEdge arrays, is based on IETF (Internet Engineering Task
Force), open standards software. MediaFile can thereby use the software's
Java (TM) technology-based applications programming interfaces (APIs) to
develop applications that are customized to the specific needs of its
broadcast customers, with the end result being an integrated, end-to-end
broadcasting solution.
"The Sun StorEdge Media Central platform is an ideal solution for our
customers, offering the high-speed power, performance and bandwidth necessary
to keep a media-intensive broadcast environment up and running," said
Thomas Hulsmann, cofounder of MediaFile. "In addition to providing a highly
stable environment, Sun's solution also provides a very short reaction time,
which is critical for fast-paced broadcast applications."
"The Sun StorEdge Media Central platform offers an incredibly flexible
media solution," said Denise Shiffman, vice president of marketing, Sun
Network Storage. "Not only can MediaFile develop customized applications for
its customers, it can also choose to integrate Web streaming along with
traditional broadcasting."
MediaFile and Sun currently are demonstrating the solution at EXPO 2000 in
Hannover, Germany, where Sun StorEdge Media Central powers the 24 audio and
video streams that comprised the Bertelsmann Media Gallery, a live display of
news and entertainment programming in the pavilion.
Sun StorEdge Media Central will be available at the SIGGRAPH 2000
conference, July 25-27 in New Orleans, La. Show visitors who are interested
in seeing a working demonstration can stop by Sun's booth #819, located in
Hall F of the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.

Sun StorEdge Media Central Platform Maximizes Flexibility and
Scalability
The integrated Sun StorEdge Media Central platform includes Sun StorEdge
Media Central software, Sun Enterprise(TM) servers and Sun StorEdge arrays.
The system delivers a broad set of flexible, custom solutions that enable
media customers to improve processes for handling, using and storing digital
content. Unlike proprietary systems, the Sun StorEdge Media Central platform
easily extends to a variety of network transports, file formats or bit rates,
and can support different bit rates simultaneously.
The Sun StorEdge Media Central platform can be configured for different
uses within a broadcast environment, such as serving as a play-to-air server,
archive server or production server. Sun StorEdge Media Central Streaming
Server software is available for Web streaming applications.
The platform offers added, open flexibility through its VideoBeans(TM)
components, which are APIs written in the Java(TM) programming language.
VideoBeans components enable customers to quickly and easily develop custom
applications for their specialized needs.
The platform's flexible design allows for future growth. Customers can
easily add servers and storage as their business demands grow.
