FAA Awards Raytheon $23 Million for Production of 50 New Air Traffic Control Beacon Interrogator Secondary Surveillance Radars

MARLBORO, Mass., July 25 /PRNewswire/ -- The Federal Aviation
Administration (FAA) has awarded Raytheon a $23 million contract for the
production of 50 new monopulse secondary surveillance radars (MSSR) for the
Air Traffic Control Beacon Interrogator (ATCBI-6) replacement program.
This award initiates the production and installation of up to 152 ATCBI-6s
for modernization of the FAA's en route radar network. Raytheon and the FAA
successfully completed site acceptance testing (SAT) in early July of the
first two pre-production systems at Elwood, N.J. and Tinker AFB, Okla. The
FAA has begun operational test and evaluation of the ATCBI-6 at the Elwood
radar site.
The ATCBI-6 replaces aging civil air traffic control radar beacon systems
used by the FAA to obtain information from en route aircraft including its
identification, altitude, airspeed and direction. The new radar systems will
integrate with existing primary surveillance radars operated by the FAA and
the Department of Defense (DoD) in support of the National Airspace System.
Raytheon is supplying its latest generation MSSR for ATCBI-6 that is presently
being supplied to both DoD and FAA as part of the ASR-11 Digital Airport
Surveillance Radar program with a Mode S selective addressing capability
incorporated. Raytheon is the world's leading supplier of MSSRs with sales of
more than 200 systems to more than 25 nations.
"Raytheon's new ATCBI-6 provides the FAA with a modern, highly reliable
radar to begin modernization of the aging beacon systems in the FAA's en route
radar systems," said James Link , the FAA's Integrated Product Team Lead for
Surveillance. "The FAA/Raytheon ATCBI-6 team has been focused on program
success since program inception and successfully completing SAT of the first
pre-production systems in less than 22 months is a major success."
"The ATCBI-6 will provide the FAA with significantly reduced life cycle
costs," said Bob Eckel, Raytheon's vice president and manager of Domestic Air
Traffic Control programs. "The FAA's decision to move into production of the
ATCBI-6 is yet another significant milestone in the modernization of the
National Airspace System."
