Flatland Announces the Open Source Release of 3DML

Flatland's Easy 3D Rich Media Platform Now Open to Community of Developers

NEW ORLEANS, July 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Today at Siggraph 2000 in
New Orleans, Flatland Online announced that it has released the source code of
its 3DML platform. 3DML (Three Dimensional Markup Language) is a 3D web
publishing format that empowers webmasters to easily create visually
compelling rich media web pages (called "Spots"). Flatland also announced
http://www.3DML.org will serve as the central source of information for updates and
future releases.
"Flatland was founded on the spirit of community development which spawned
the Internet in the first place," explained Michael Powers, CEO of Flatland
Online. "Releasing the source code for 3DML will encourage the creative
involvement of graphics engineers and Internet developers in extending the
easiest Web 3D format."
In an ongoing effort to foster developer and builder expansion of 3DML,
the release of the 3DML source code follows the release earlier this year of
Flatland's Blockset format. The Flatland Blocksets comprise the building
blocks of this easy to learn web 3D format. Now Flatland builders can build
3DML spots based on blocksets of their own design. "As the builders became
more savvy with 3DML, they began asking for access to build their own
blocksets. So we gave it to them! The strength of 3DML is in the dedication of
the builders, who have truly committed their time and energy into expanding
the creative and technical potential of 3DML. We fully expect that enthusiasm
to carry over into the realm of 3DML software and tools development."
Information about the release of the 3DML source code is available here:
http://www.3dml.org .
The source code is being released under the Flatland Public License, which
is modeled after the Mozilla Public License. The text of the License is
available here: http://www.flatland.com/FPL/FPL-1_1.html .
