American General Names Presidents in Two Life Insurance Companies

    HOUSTON, July 27 /PRNewswire/ -- American General (NYSE: AGC) today
announced two executive appointments in its life insurance division.
    Ronald H. Ridlehuber has been named president and chief executive officer
of American General Life Insurance Company.  Mike Nicholson has been named
president of The Franklin Life Insurance Company, and will report directly to
William A. Simpson, chairman and chief executive officer of Franklin Life.
Ridlehuber succeeds Rodney O. Martin, Jr., who serves as chairman and chief
executive officer of the American General Life Companies, and will report
directly to Martin.  The American General Life Companies represent six life
insurance subsidiaries that serve the financial security needs of more than
4 million customers through a distribution network of 27,000 independent
agents.
    In commenting on the announcement, Robert M. Devlin, chairman and chief
executive officer, said, "We are pleased to welcome Ron and Mike to American
General.  Ron has the seasoned expertise with marketing and distributing
financial products to make a significant contribution in developing new

    Ridlehuber joins American General Life from Jefferson Pilot Life Insurance
Company where he served as senior vice president and chief marketing officer,
with responsibility for a distribution network of 13,000 agents.  Previously,
he served as Jefferson Pilot's senior vice president of independent marketing
with responsibility for agency distribution.  He began his 20-year financial
services career with Southland Life Insurance Company, where he served as vice
president, sales; and as second vice president, marketing administration.
    Ridlehuber, 45, is a native of Snyder, Texas.  He received his B.B.A.
degree from Southern Methodist University in Dallas in 1975.  Ridlehuber is a
Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU), and a Fellow, Life Management Institute
(FLMI).
    Nicholson's 31-year financial services industry career includes 24 years
with General American Life Insurance, where he most recently served as senior
vice president of sales and marketing with responsibility for agency
distribution.  He joined General American as an agent in 1974 and became
agency vice president of the company's home office in 1994.
    Nicholson, 53, is a native of Madison, Wisconsin.  He is a 25-year member
of the Million Dollar Round Table, and has served on the board of trustees and
as past president of the National Association of Life Underwriters (NALU).  He
has received the Distinguished Service Awards from both the Madison and
Wisconsin Associations of Life Underwriters.  Nicholson is a Chartered Life
Underwriter (CLU) and a Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC).
