DALLAS, July 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Harbison-Walker Refractories of
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a division of Global Industrial Technologies
(NYSE: GIX) of Dallas, Texas, and a producer of heat resistant brick and
monolithic products for the steel, cement, and glass industries, has announced
the closure or consolidation of five refractory plants throughout the U.S.
This is in addition to the Company's previously announced pending sale of its
Lehi, Utah facility.
The closures are the initial step in the Company's consolidation of
recently acquired A.P. Green Industries of Mexico, Missouri. Global
Industrial Technologies is a major participant in the rationalization of the
North American refractories industry in an effort to position Harbison-Walker
as a market, industry and niche leader. The plants currently scheduled for
immediate closure or restructure, include:
Rockdale, Illinois (Immediate)
Sulphur Springs, Texas (30-60 days)
Fulton, Missouri (Harbison-Walker) (30-90 days)
Bessemer ( A. P. Green) (Closed)
Smithville, Ontario (partial) (30-90 days)
Harbison-Walker has retained outplacement specialists, along with local
employment services, to assist with job search efforts with some 270 displaced
hourly and salaried personnel, 20 of whom are in Mexico Missouri.
