SAN JOSE, Calif., July 27 /PRNewswire/ -- SDL, Inc. (Nasdaq: SDLI) today
announced the appointment of Michael L. Foster, 52, as Chief Financial Officer
on an interim basis.  He replaces Vincent McCord, 51, who is leaving SDL on
August 6 to join a start-up company.

working with him and wish him well in his new endeavor," said Donald R.
Scifres, chairman and chief executive officer.
    In commenting on Foster's appointment, Scifres said, "We believe Michael's
25 years of experience in financial planning and management with public
companies in the telecommunications and semiconductor industries make him
uniquely qualified to assist SDL at this time.  We have also initiated a
formal search to appoint a permanent chief financial officer, and will update
shareholders when that search is completed."
    Foster most recently served as Corporate Treasurer and Vice President of
Planning for 19 years with California Microwave, Inc., a leading provider of
wireless and satellite communications equipment.  During his tenure there, he
oversaw the company's investments and completed several acquisitions and
divestitures.  Prior to that, he was Division Finance Manager with Watkins-
Johnson Co., a leading provider of semiconductor manufacturing equipment and
wireless communications infrastructure products.  Foster has also served as
Controller and Chief Financial Officer for the Midpeninsula Regional Open
Space District.  Foster has a master's degree in business administration from
Stanford University.
    SDL designs, manufactures and markets semiconductor optoelectronic
integrated circuits, semiconductor lasers, fiber optic related products and
optoelectronic based systems.  The company's products are used in a diversity
of markets such as telecommunications, cable television satellite
communications, printing, medical, data storage, consumer electronics, sensor,
defense, materials processing and instrument markets.
