Sun-Netscape Alliance Delivers Non-Stop Service for Large E-Commerce Sites With Netscape Application Server 4.0

 Over 40 Percent of the Fortune 50 Companies Use Netscape Application Server
                      To Power Their Internet Businesses

    MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., July 27 /PRNewswire/ -- The Sun-Netscape Alliance
(Alliance) today announced Netscape(R) Application Server 4.0, the industry's
fastest, most scalable application server for deploying non-stop, large,
transactional e-commerce sites. Expected to ship in August, Netscape
Application Server 4.0 is a key milestone in the Alliance application server
strategy for delivering the industry leading application server solution and
its vision for fulfilling next-generation requirements for e-commerce. The
Alliance also announced Netscape(R) Application Builder 4.0 development
environment for building enterprise-class applications.
    Over 40 percent of the Fortune 50 use Netscape Application Server to power
their businesses. In addition, four of the top five banks and four of the top
five telecommunications companies leverage Netscape Application Server for
their online applications. The product is also used by half of the top ten
most trafficked financial services Internet sites. Companies such as Cable
& Wireless HKT, drkoop.com, Inc., GTE, National Discount Brokers, Oakley and
Pegasus Systems are using Netscape Application Server to move their business
processes online to meet the demands of customers, partners and suppliers.

    Netscape Application Server 4.0 continues to provide the high performance,
high availability, legacy integration and manageability capabilities that
enterprises need to build and deploy massively-scalable, mission-critical
business-to-business and business-to-consumer e-commerce applications in the
Net Economy. Netscape Application Server 4.0 adds additional features and
functionality such as:

    * Standards-based application model -- supports Enterprise JavaBeans(TM),
      Java Server Page(TM) technology (JSP), JDBC and the Java(TM) Servlet
      API.
    * Distributed transaction support -- tight integration with IBM TX Series
      enables high performance and centralized management. Supports data
      integrity across the Enterprise JavaBeans architecture and heterogeneous
      data sources.
    * Enhanced performance and scalability -- significant performance
      optimization to the core server, as well as new self-tuning load balance
      option.
    * Bulletproof availability -- in addition to the existing distributed
      state and session management features, failover functionality now
      extends to the new application programming model.
    * Enterprise-class administration -- Multiple system management options
      now include support for SNMP, Netscape Console, as well as Netscape
      Application Server Administrator.

    Netscape Application Builder 4.0 provides the development environment for
building high-performance e-commerce applications. The latest version of
Netscape Application Builder provides an Enterprise Java Beans wizard,
presentation wizards, database wizard and a template editor all using a
standard component model. Netscape Application Builder is also interoperable
with third party tools such as Symantec Visual Cafe and Macromedia
Dreamweaver.

    Pricing and Availability
    Netscape Application Server 4.0 is expected to ship in August and is
priced at $35,000 per CPU. Netscape Application Builder 4.0 is expected to
ship in September and is priced at $1,295 per developer seat. Netscape
Application Server 4.0 and Netscape Application Builder 4.0 will continue to
support multiple hardware platforms.
