SAN RAMON, Calif., July 27 /PRNewswire/ -- The Web3D Consortium today
announced the results of the annual election of Directors. Under the terms of
the revised by-laws, 7 of the 11 seats are to be filled by representatives of
corporate and academic members of the Consortium, and 4 of the 11 seats are to
be filled by representatives drawn from the Professional membership. The
newly elected corporate board members are Walter Schwarz (blaxxun
interactive), Sandy Ressler (National Institute of Standards and Technology),
Don Brutzman (Naval Postgraduate School), Rick Rafey (Sony Corporation),
Martin Reddy (SRI International), Rob Glidden (Sun Microsystems) and
Neil Trevett (3Dlabs). The newly elected Professional board members are
Matthew Beitler, Nicholas Polys, Michael Wagner, and Joe Williams.
Mr. Trevett was re-elected President of the Consortium.
"I am delighted to report the election of a strong board which is
committed to ensuring the Consortium plays a vital and relevant role in the
industry by enabling the power of open standards to expand the Web3D market.
I also want to acknowledge the contributions of the outgoing Directors," said
Trevett. "This past year has resulted in strong advances toward completion of
the requirements for acceptance of VRML-related and X3D standards by ISO, as
well as the development of an evolving Consortium Software Development Kit
(SDK). The most recent versions of the SDK are being distributed this week to
Consortium members and the industry at SIGGRAPH 2000 in New Orleans."
Don Brutzman reported on the progress of the Consortium's X3D Working
Group. "Three dozen people from 25 companies and universities attended the
Sunday meeting of X3D contributors in New Orleans. They expressed strong
interest in rapid completion of the baseline X3D implementations and API.
Successful delivery of the open-source example implementation is now planned
for this fall. Opportunities for volunteer partners and programmers to
participate are still available."
