Heinz Elects Thomas J. Usher to Its Board

    PITTSBURGH, July 27, 2000 /PRNewswire/ -- The H. J. Heinz Company
(NYSE: HNZ) Board has elected Thomas J. Usher as a Director.
    Mr. Usher (57) is Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of USX
Corporation (NYSE: MRO - Marathon Group, X - U.S. Steel Group), based in
Pittsburgh.
    Mr. Usher is Chairman of the U.S.-Korea Business Council, Vice Chairman of
the International Iron and Steel Institute, a Director of the U.S.-Japan
Business Council and a Director and member of the executive and policy
committees of the American Petroleum Institute.  Additionally, he is a member
of The Business Roundtable and The Business Council.
    Mr. Usher serves as a trustee of the University of Pittsburgh and on the
boards of the Boy Scouts of America and The Extra Mile Education Foundation.
In addition, he is a director of PPG Industries, PNC Financial Services Group,
Inc. and Transtar, Inc.
    In 1966, Mr. Usher began his career with U.S. Steel in its industrial
engineering department in Pittsburgh.  He was transferred in 1975 to the
firm's South (Chicago) Works and there served in a number of supervisory
positions, including supervisor of the 30-inch plate mill.  In 1978, he was
named assistant division superintendent of the primary mills at Gary (Indiana)
Works.
    Mr. Usher returned to Pittsburgh in 1979 as Director of Corporate
Strategic Planning.  He held a succession of senior management positions at
U.S. Steel Mining Co., Inc. and, in 1990, was appointed President of the steel
division and joined the USX corporate policy committee.  He was elected
President of U.S. Steel Group and the USX board of directors in 1991 and
became President and Chief Operating Officer of USX Corporation in 1994.  Mr.
Usher was elected to his current post in 1995.
    A native of Reading, Pennsylvania, Mr. Usher holds a B.S. degree in
industrial engineering, an M.S. degree in operations research, and a Ph.D. in
systems engineering, all from the University of Pittsburgh.
