Rational Software Announces Highlights of 2001 Rational User Conference

    LEXINGTON, Mass., July 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Rational Software
(Nasdaq: RATL), the e-development company(TM), today announced that
approximately 2,000 people from 41 countries attended the Rational User
Conference 2001 "Blazing New Trails", held this week in Denver.

    International attendees comprised 20 percent of the total, demonstrating
Rational's growth and success around the globe.  The conference featured more
than 200 technical sessions in 10 tracks focused on software development.  Led
by customers, Rational thought leaders, engineers, and partners, the
conference sessions were selected from more than 500 submissions.
    Highlights of the Rational User Conference 2001 include an opening keynote
presentation from Mike Devlin, co-founder and chief executive officer, and
Paul Levy, co-founder and chairman.  Mr. Devlin provided an overview of recent
news and product developments from Rational, as well as information on the
successes that customers have realized from the use of Rational's software
development solution.  Mr. Levy commented on the ever-growing importance of
software in government, society and business.
    Mr. Devlin and Mr. Levy were joined in their presentation by John
Swainson, general manager, Application & Integration Middleware Division, IBM
Software Group; and Tom Button, vice president of Developer Tools, Microsoft,
who provided insight into their respective relationships with Rational, as
well an overview of their companies' recent initiatives.
