BEDFORD, Mass., July 27 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- RSA Security (Nasdaq:
RSAS) announced today that Vanguard will employ two elements of the RSA(R)
Adaptive Authentication solution to protect its clients against online
fraud and identity theft. Vanguard, one of the world's largest investment
management firms, manages more than $980 billion in U.S. mutual fund assets
in 20 million shareholder accounts.
"Maintaining a secure online experience for our clients is critical to
us," said Tim Thornton, Vanguard's head of web services. "RSA Security has
a well-earned reputation for its online account authentication system and
we're pleased to incorporate its additional layers of account security to
further protect our growing number of Vanguard.com users."
Behind-the-scenes Risk-Based Authentication
Using the clients' computers as a second factor of authentication, the
system is engineered to provide a positive identification based on device
and network forensics, behavioral analysis and other parameters. The
solution then quickly -- and silently -- classifies login attempts
according to the perceived level of risk in real-time and automatically
invokes additional security measures if needed, all with minimal impact to
the online investor.
Visible Authentication of the Website to the Customer
The solution also includes site-to-user authentication. Registered
users of Vanguard.com will be provided with a confidential, personal image
and a phrase known only to the customer and to Vanguard itself. This image
is displayed after the client enters the username during the log on
process, thereby authenticating the Vanguard.com site to the customer and
confirming that it is safe to proceed with the rest of the account-access
process (entering a password, etc.).
With the deployment of RSA Adaptive Authentication, Vanguard will join
and leverage the RSA eFraudNetwork(TM) community, the world's leading and
most effective network of institutions fighting online financial fraud.
With membership comprising thousands of financial organizations worldwide,
the eFraudNetwork community collates some of the best, most up-to-date
intelligence from across the globe in real-time, giving financial
institutions instantaneous information and immediate protection. When an
attack is detected against one member firm, the fraudster profile is
entered into the eFraudNetwork system and all other members are protected
instantaneously.
"Security is a key consideration for organizations conducting business
online today, with particular urgency in the financial services arena.
Therefore top financial institutions like Vanguard are taking multiple
steps to boost their customers' confidence in the online channel -- and to
ensure the security of their transaction network and the assets they
manage," said Chris Young, Senior Vice President and General Manager,
Consumer Solutions Division, RSA Security. "RSA Adaptive Authentication
works behind-the-scenes to help protect end-users, while simultaneously
providing customers with peace of mind by authenticating the investment
firm's web site to the user via a shared secret."
