Biogen Idec (Nasdaq: BIIB) today announced the appointment of two executive
vice presidents.

Michael Gilman, Ph.D., has been named Executive Vice President, Research
and will oversee all discovery research. Dr. Gilman joined Biogen Idec in
1999, serving most recently as Senior Vice President, Research. He spent
eight years on the scientific staff of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New
York and five years at ARIAD Pharmaceuticals in various positions, including
Executive Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer. He holds a Ph.D. in
Biochemistry from the University of California, Berkeley, and an S.B. in Life
Sciences from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dr. Gilman will
continue to report to William H. Rastetter, Ph.D., Executive Chairman.
Mark Wiggins has been appointed Executive Vice President, Business
Development and will have responsibility for global business development. Mr.
Wiggins began his career with Biogen Idec in 1998 as Vice President and then
Senior Vice President, Business Development. With 20 years of industry
experience in marketing and business development, Mr. Wiggins has held posts
at Hybridon, Schering Plough, Pfizer, and Johnson & Johnson. Mr. Wiggins
earned an M.B.A. from the University of Arizona and a B.S. from Syracuse
University. He will report to James C. Mullen, Chief Executive Officer.
