RESTON, Va., July 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) has been
awarded a $15 million contract by the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA)
to procure and transport equipment in Russia as part of the U.S. government's
Cooperative Threat Reduction (CTR) program.
Under this five-month contract, Raytheon Technical Services Company will
procure heavy and light equipment in Russia on behalf of DTRA for use by the
Russian Ministry of Defense (MOD) in support of forest fire prevention and
containment. The equipment, including bulldozers, fire trucks, chainsaws, and
fire-fighting items, will be delivered to Sergeiv Posad and Abramavo, Russia.
Since 1994 Raytheon has provided logistics support to CTR projects involving
transporting storing, dismantling, safeguarding, and destroying weapons of
mass destruction in the former Soviet Union. Under this contract, Raytheon
will continue that support by procuring and delivering safety and support
equipment for the MOD.
"Raytheon has worked in arms control operations in the former Soviet Union
since 1988," said Bryan Even, a vice president of Raytheon Company. "We look
forward to continuing to help the Defense Threat Reduction Agency implement
successful programs, reduce the weapons infrastructure, and maintain safe
conditions in the former Soviet Union."
The CTR program helps successor states of the former Soviet Union reduce
their weapons of mass destruction and the infrastructure supporting them. In
1995, as part of the CTR program, the Nuclear Weapons Storage Security
Agreement was signed by the U.S. Department of Defense and Russian Ministry of
Defense to provide assistance to the Russian Federation by supplying
equipment, training, and logistics support to expedite the security of nuclear
weapons.
