Palo Alto Businesswoman and Incubator Development Expert Appointed to Board of International Association

PALO ALTO, Calif., July 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Carol Kraus Lauffer, a
principal with Business Cluster Development, has been appointed to the
board of directors of the National Business Incubation Association. Her
one-year term begins Oct. 1.
Since becoming a principal with Business Cluster Development in 2002,
Lauffer has helped numerous universities, corporations and communities plan
and develop successful business incubation programs. She also has managed
some of these programs on an interim basis and has served a total of 10
years on advisory boards of the Software Business Cluster and the
Environmental Business Cluster, two successful, nationally recognized
incubators in San Jose, California.
Business incubation programs catalyze the process of starting and
growing companies by providing entrepreneurs with the expertise, networks
and tools they need to make their ventures successful. In 2001 alone, North
American incubators assisted more than 35,000 start-up companies that
provided full- time employment for nearly 82,000 workers and generated
annual revenue of more than $7 billion.
"Lauffer was appointed to the board because of her intelligence and
strategic understanding and because I think it is extremely important to
have a board member with deep experience in all the issues involved in
incubator development," says Dinah Adkins, President and CEO of the
National Business Incubation Association, noting that Lauffer's firm has
worked with more than 40 incubator development projects. "We would not have
this experience otherwise."
Lauffer hopes to draw on her incubation experiences to help promote
NBIA and the business incubation industry during her board tenure. "I hope
to focus on industry trends, the opportunities they present, and how to
best leverage these opportunities for NBIA and its members," she said.
Based in Athens, Ohio, the National Business Incubation Association is
the world's leading organization advancing business incubation and
entrepreneurship. Since 1985, NBIA has provided industry professionals with
information, education, advocacy and networking resources to bring
excellence to the process of assisting early-stage companies.
NBIA's board of directors, made up of representatives from leading
business incubation programs, governs the organization. The group meets
three times a year to discuss association business, including educational
programming, finances, member recruitment/services and publications.
