Applied Imaging and DAKO Announce Strategic Alliance

    SANTA CLARA, Calif., Aug. 1 /PRNewswire/ --
Applied Imaging Corp. (Nasdaq: AICX) and DAKO announced the formation of a
strategic alliance for the development and marketing of image analysis
applications for immunohistochemistry (IHC) and genetic probe assays. These
applications will optimize the Applied Imaging MDS(TM) multiparameter cellular
analysis system to read and interpret the results of a specific menu of assays
available from DAKO, including HercepTest (TM) and ImmunoCyt(TM).
MDS(TM) will utilize the applications to identify and classify cancer
cells in tissues and body fluids that have been appropriately stained using
DAKO assay systems. Information from the MDS(TM) system will assist
pathologists utilizing the DAKO assay systems in the analysis of cancer cell
characteristics. "It is clear that image analysis will be a very important
part of DAKO's complete product offering. Applied Imaging's MDS(TM) system is
an excellent complement to DAKO's integrated system solution for the pathology
laboratory," said Viggo Harboe, President, DAKO Corporation.
The DAKO HercepTest assay has been approved by the FDA for use as an aid
in the assessment of patients who are being considered for Herceptin(R)
therapy. The ImmunoCyt assay has been FDA cleared for use as an aid in the
early detection of recurrent bladder cancer. ImmunoCyt is licensed by DAKO
Corporation from DiagnoCure Inc. of Quebec City, Canada. Following
development activities and FDA approval, these MDS(TM) imaging applications
will be made available for routine clinical use.
According to Carl Hull, Applied Imaging's President and CEO, "This
alliance represents an excellent fit for our companies, from both a technical
perspective as well as a business development perspective. We are pleased to
work with a market leader like DAKO in order to expand the capabilities of our
MDS(TM) platform." Hull continued, "The development of applications using
both brightfield microscopy and our proprietary fluorescence (FISH) imaging
technology takes advantage of the flexibility which has been designed into the
MDS(TM) system. We are continuously looking for opportunities to expand our
applications menu on this unique system."

    Applied Imaging
Applied Imaging Corp., based in Santa Clara, California, is the leading
supplier of automated imaging systems utilized in genetics and pathology
laboratories for the analysis of chromosomes in cancer and prenatal disorders.
The Company has installed over 2000 imaging systems in 1000 laboratories in
more than 35 countries. Applied Imaging markets a range of clinical and
research imaging systems for fluorescence and brightfield microscopy
applications, including the Company's MDS(TM), CytoVision(R), PowerGene(R) and
QUIPS(R) product lines.

    About the MDS(TM) System
The MDS(TM) System is an advanced scanning microscopy system that has
received FDA clearance as an aid to the pathologist in the detection,
classification and counting of cells of interest. The MDS(TM) has been shown
to be capable of detecting targeted cancer cells in concentrations as low as
one cell among one million other cells. In addition, the MDS(TM) utilizes
proprietary fluorescence research software for the analysis of multiple
genetic markers within individual cells or in tissue sections taken from
primary tumors.

    About DAKO
DAKO is a fully integrated, global provider of cancer diagnostic and
research products for pathology and oncology. The Company's products utilize
antibodies, nucleic acid probes, and proprietary detection technologies to
identify specific disease-associated molecules in tissues and cells. DAKO has
seventeen subsidiaries and more than forty distributors worldwide. DAKO
Corporation is a wholly-owned subsidiary of DAKO A/S of Glostrup, Denmark.

    About DiagnoCure
DiagnoCure Inc. is a leading developer of innovative technologies for the
